My friend at work is a dress designer in her free time and she would like to have some outdoor shots done for her website and promotional material. Her theme is evening wear black dresses. She has asked me to suggest some locations and I'm really stuck! So I thought I'd tap in to the creative ideas of the TP community. Only restriction is it has to be in London.

I agree with the Albert Hall but timing will be critical

It depends what her brand wants to convey I would suggest, where would she want people to be wearing her outfits?

Probably not in a car park like one I did recently

initially we were gonna go for studio, then we decided to do on location instead. She saw one shot in a magazine that was taken in an underground subway but it was quite a grunge look. Her dresses are evening party dresses, so I was thinking a classy look, with warm lighting. but i think that has to be indoors which will be even more difficult to organise!

I would normally say its cliched, but as its evening wear, what about down on the southbank, outside the NFT where there is the avenue of trees with the blue neon fairy lights strung in them? Some additional fill in flash should make for some lovely results. Mind you, will be a bit cold down there at this time of year for those strapless dresses :gag:

Or maybe covent garden market, late at night when there are few people around and empty stalls....

albert hall midnight..big lighting thing...police standing round etc
punch and munch

i quite like the idea of convent garden and the south bank, i think i know where exactly. I will run the ideas by her tomorrow. Only problem is, seeing as it gets dark early now, i cant just rely on flashes, i need continous lighting.

hmmm yeah, why!? the street will be fairly well lit up so I just need to apply the lighting i need for the shot.

indeed, my thinking would be to use the darkness [its evening wear afterall] combined with street lighting and just strobes for that extra boost on the models.
Covent garden market is also under cover and I think is lit over night, so definately worth a look. Mind you, xmas lights might be also up and running by now too, which may not fit with what client wants, depending on what style they have opted for this year.

yeah will discuss these points with her tomorrow, thanks ever so much for the guidance.

Following some advice from TP people here last week - I headed down to Southbank - and there are indeed some wonderful opportunities there - however - there are also a load of jobsworth security people that state you require a permit.. They'll point you in the direction of where to get one - but as it was late on Friday afternoon, if I'd spent all my time waiting for a permit, it'd have been dark before I was able to photograph. Therefore before you go trundling off - to wherever you decide - it might be worth checking whether a permit is required, how to get one, and how long it'll take :)

If you do get one - it'll be worth it though!
