Outdoor portrait lighting tips required.

I've had a good look through the messages on this board and have done a search but can't find what I'm looking for.

I am soon to photograph 3 friends (seperately) to build on my portfolio and gain much needed experience. All shoots will be done outside due to having no studio access. Having done no portrait shots before I'm concerned about lighting. The chances are it'll be an overcast day, no strong light or shadows etc.

I want the photos to look as professional as possible and I'm not sure what sort of set up I'll need. I figure a reflector would be a good idea to make the most of available light however I'm not sure how these can be positioned as I'll have no one to hold them. Also fill flash? yes/no? tips? All I have is a fairly basic Jessops flash gun, no cable for off camera use but could get one before the shoots.

I don't really have the money to spend on fancy stuff at the moment (just spent almost 1k on camera stuff in the past few months *gulp*)

Any tips greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
