Outlook 2010 indexing problems - NOT RESOLVED!

For some time I have been experiencing issues with Outlook 2010 indexing, the indexing service seemed to never end and sometimes would appear to restart from the beginning. So when doing a search it would typically say it couldn't find something that was received maybe 5 days ago and reported that it was currently indexing. I ran scanpst and it found errors so I clicked on 'repair', which it did ... but no change.

In desperation I downloaded and installed Lookeen Pro which seemed to offer indexing with additional features. However Lookeen seemed to be having the same problems; after indexing for a couple of days (it claims to index in minutes to a couple of hours) it yesterday showed around 28,000 items indexed and I could search way back. Today, doing a search brings up just a handful of results and the index has dropped to double figures!

I have run scanpst again and it has again found errors and I have clicked on repair, it reports 'repair complete' - I don't think that is going to resolve the issue! I have switched off Outlook's own indexing just in case there was some sort of conflict but nothing has changed.

Anyone any ideas what I can do to resolve the issue?
I don't really want to lose all of the existing emails etc and start again if that can be avoided but at the moment can't see another way out.
Any suggestions (except change mail client) would be much appreciated.

TIA

why don't you archive old messages so the indexer has less to do?

I could archive but the Lookeen indexer is supposed to be able to cope with indexes of up to 100GB and mine is less than 2. If I archive then I lose the ability to search what's in the archive ... don't I? If so that's not solving the problem it's side-stepping it.

Yeah I'm beginning to think that's all I can do - indexing options has a rebuild option, I'm guessing that deletes it and starts over?

Well that was a revelation ... 5 minutes later and the whole index has been replaced and everything is searchable! Looks like it may have resolved it ... hopefully.

Outlook just stopped working and offered a restart ... after restarting, the index has gone back to zero!
