Outside Group photo

Hello all,

Just a few questions if you please. I am shooting a small group photo (probably btw 3-5) tomorrow. In all likelihood the location will be outside with some tree/vegetation as a background. If we should be so lucky as to have some sunshine, how should I orientate the group in relation to the sun? I would imagine with the sun not behind them directly into the camera! If I have the sign behind me I imagine it could create a harsh light, so would a bit of flash be useful to light any dark shadow areas on the face?

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks.

You'll actually be better off without sun, as strong sunlight tends to produce harsh lighting. I'd orient the group so that the sun was to one side or the other, not behind (flare risk), not in front (squint risk).

I'd definitely use some fill flash, whether or not the sun was strong as it gives a nice highlight in the eyes. I normally start with FEC as -2/3 and then chimp a couple of shots, adjusting if necessary. I also recommend putting the camera on a tripod when doing a group shot. Look at the subjects directly once the camera is composed - easier to spot when everyone is looking the right way!

Good luck

You don't want the sun! I'd probably use fill flash - sunny or dull.

Thanks for the advice. I have taken the pictures, thankfully the sun wasn't out..and I used fill-flash. Thanks again.
