Overcast Days

With exception of a few months of early summer / late spring I've been very frustrated with cloudy days. I like taking pictures of landscapes and buildings in the city centre, but I feel when it's cloudy they end up lifeless. I have no problem shooting anytime of the day though it's better to do when sun is low.

However, after working for a week and looking forward to go out with the camera at weekend and end up cloudy and overcast I feel very frustrated. Even more so when we have a nice sunny day when am stuck in the office at work. Often look forward to going around the corner to Lyme Park, or Salford Quays or other places near me.

Just wondering if there's a way to take advantage of such weather when it comes to outdoor photography? Or is it just a hopeless fight?

Yeah, could try the black and white approach if I can find a good subject. Long exposures around here wouldn't be that interesting on a overcast day. Think I will stay in rest of the day and go out tomorrow if it's cloudy and try and find interesting subjects.

How about working outside your normal and doing some indoor shots - flowers, macro, drops, smoke, that kind of thing. Will keep you going and may help to invigorate you!

Increase contrast a bit in post processing, eg by dropping the shadows and highlights point in Levels?

Also, in some shots perhaps you could try to find some object that's colourful and use that as foreground interest so that it stands out from the low-contrast background?

Good idea. I love photos of objects and items. I've stuck to outdoors stuff and could be good idea to do indoors stuff and try my hand at that.

I know exactly how you feel..I've hardly taken a landscape photo in 4 months although I do normally find that most of my photos are taken between Sept/March anyway.

I used to venture out on dull/flat days anyway but I've rarely been happy with the results...these days I just play the waiting game for better conditions
