Looking at specks for new pc what is the differance/ benefits of the
Asus p8p67 pro over the cheaper Asus p67?

Couple of extra ports via an extender, maybe another couple of SATA and I think slightly better power supply config. I have the standard P8P67 and it's solid as a rock with a i7-2600k at 4.3GHz....

Cheers for that, just trying to get a spec. together, probably using the
i5-2500k. Don't want to spend more than I have to.

the pro has a few extra things like graphics SLI support, the cheaper one has the "express" chipset which means you have different SATA controllers etc.

the pro comes with clocking software (not really worth it in my opinion, just makes life easier for overclocking newbs).

ive got the pro, just because i had the budget. from what i read the cheaper varients are well worth a look.
