Pan-Tilt vs Ball head for camcorder use

Looking at the Redsnapper tripods atm, which look good!

I'm also trying to decide between the ball heads, or the 3-way pan, for sports/training use.

This is for use with a camcorder (around £300 with x50 zoom) and the plan is to track a boat on a long stretch of water from around 1-2km upstream, all the way to when it is passing by in front of the camera (side view), and then away (seeing the back).

So there would be a need to operate the zoom, as well as the panning/tilting (assuming the boat is lower us and we'd need to tilt down as it passes by).

I can see Redsnapper 2 of each type, but I'm unsure as to which would be most suitable for my needs. Any advise?
 
buy a fluid head for video (a good one, if you can afford it)

ball head can do rotate with ball locked in positon (rotating base), but free up the ball and its free in all axis.

the 3 way is pretty decent too
 
Any good recommendations to start with for fluid heads?
I think I'll get a redsnapper 284/61 combo to start with, but there are so many options!
