"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

I have my Sony A7 and 3 MFT cameras. Having so many cameras and two mounts doesn't really make sense but they each have their advantages so so far I haven't been able to abandon either mount as there's no do it all system for me.

That could replace my 7-14 very nicely.

7 & 8mm are too wide, distorted at the edges. 12, 13, 14mm are covered very nicely by the 12-60 lens.

9mm is the ultimate ultra wide angle.

I've often found that you don't need the latest and greatest to get results. An AC Cobra captured on a GH2 (first released in 2010)...

I loved my G1. It was possibly the best handling camera I've ever had. I loved using it but there's no doubt that later MFT cameras improved the image quality, pushed the ISO up and just moved just about every technical aspect forward.
 
This isn't connected to my post above about newer cameras moving things on, it's just that I intended to post a picture of my GX80 and 14mm f2.5 and say that this combination is a joy to use as it's so compact and light. I'm posting it now as the GX80 and my A7 were in the same room and I could therefore take the picture :D

It's not as small and light as the GM5 and 20mm f1.7 but it is still small and light and can be carried in one hand all day.

I had the rubbery blue G1 -- the first ever EVIL camera if I remember correctly. Should never have sold it as it might well become a collectors item! My GH2, with a much better sensor, I owned during possibly my most creative photographic period (which isn't saying much) and I'm still amazed by the fine colours in a lot of these shots even if performance in trickier light can't match the Nikon Z6 I use these days. Covid has meant closing down most photographic society meetings and classes and I'm still a bit in the doldrums photographically in terms of motivation. Hence the occasional nostalgia trip.....
 
My G1, though ergonomic and capable of decent results, literally creaked in my hands. Very plasticky. The GH1 was much better, but by then they seemed to be putting the emphasis on video.

Well I caved in and purchased a GX9 from John Lewis that was one sale :) Came with the 12-32 mm lens, so I can spend this evening setting this up. I can take this to USA, and places like Drayton Manor next week and leave the more expensive G9 at home. Wife liked it also as its smaller and she wants to try it out.

Any recommendations for good third party batteries and screen cover?

Also, what's the average shutter life on these? I read the G9 is something like 200,000.

First thing on your accessories list should be the extended eyepiece, makes a world of difference.
The not that great evf becomes much nicer to use and cuts out any unwanted light.

My GX9 has been to a fair few European cities with me, its an excellent travel camera.
Mine has the Olympus 12-45 almost permanently attached and would be the last camera I would ever sell.

One thing I wish it had is a wired remote release jack, but that's my only real complaint.
Only use Lumix batteries (got them cheap from a pricing error) and never bothered with a screen cover.
In camera charging takes a while, I bought a separate usb powered charger which comes in handy.

I have a couple of Duracell spare batteries. Theyre slightly lower capacity than the Lumix but I think they're fine for the price.
I don't trust battery brands I dont know. I've seen too many laptop burnouts from cheap ebay sourced lithium batteries.
 
I went to Stratford on the weekend and took the G9 with the 12-60 Lens (I tend to just leave this on its the Leica one) and took about 537 pictures (street photography for my course homework). I love the G9 it is so comfortable and it can fire off shots so quickly. I even thought about getting rid of my S5 and just using the M43 set up moving forwards as I'm not a pro and make no money from it lol. I could sell my S5 kit and buy some nice lenses for the G9 and GX9. Will have to see how it goes. But I find myself reaching for the G9 more than the S5.

I agree with @tijuana taxi that the extended eye-piece is a must.

That grip looks much better than the one I tried.
I got the Panasonic version that had no cut out for the battery/card compartment.
Didn't feel it made much difference grip wise and returned it for a refund,

Thanks, maybe I will get a screen protector although its held up well without one for the past nearly four years
 
@Adamcski ... I bought batteries and a charger from Expro Direct. And batteries for other cameras in the past, as recommended by folk on this site.

Just looked, and Expro now come under the https://boxed2me.co.uk/ umbrella. Hmmmm
 
I agree about the extended eyecup. But one thing I did with mine when I had it was to tape down the whole eyepiece. I found it irritatingly flipped up when caught on clothing etc., and frankly of little use when it was raised.
