Panasonic L10. The only review I agree with.

I must admit I was swayed by first reports of the L10. It is a good camera, whichever way you look at it. But, without seeing it, he's probably got a point. I think as long as you get the idea that it's a compact camera out of your head, you'll be fine.

No doubt a good camera mate, but I can't see the point of it.

I think a lot of people will. I always think the Peta Pixel reviews are the litmus test for new cameras. I shall be interested to hear what they have to say.

Everyone is jumping on the compacts hype bandwagon.
As much as I enjoyed using LX100 and LX100ii, I'm not paying over a grand for one.

Rather just buy an A7CR at these prices :ROFLMAO:

There are two aspects to this camera that have surprised me.

Firstly the almost universal uncritical love by reviewers on Youtube that have not been balanced by some of the negatives apparent from the specifications of the camera. Just do a search on the Lumix L10 reviews where most are smitten, 'Fuji should be worried', 'feels like a turning point', 'the ultimate EDC camera?', the larger size improves handling, sensor size doesn't matter anymore, it's a premium compact camera don't you know. Objective balanced reviews are rare but the video posted above in this thread did a very good job of it.

Secondly, I'd love to know the logic of some of the design and engineering decisions for what is a thinly disguised LX100 Mk3. A new(?) mechanical shutter tops out at 1/2000 so likely needs an ND filter or two. It has a mic jack but no IBIS so video is realistically only ever to be shot on a tripod or gimbal. The bigger body does allow a bigger battery, but for me there's a reason I kept my two Olympus Pens and sold the EM1. The EVF has a lower resolution but at least is now an OLED panel, the camera at least escaped a current Panasonic trend to delete EVFs or not spec them in the first place. Is the lens and sensor more dust proof than the earlier cameras, nobody mentions it at all. I will wait to actually handle one to assess the build quality and value for money and who knows maybe I have a light bulb moment, but £1299 is some ask from my perspective and indeed too close to the Leica Digilux 8. I know this is a sparsely populated part of the market currently and others will think the offering fits their requirements and that's fine by me.

"Sparsely populated part of the market" Well maybe there's a reason.

You want smaller? It's out there, You want to change lenses? It's out there, you want IBIS? it's out there, You want cameras that can do so much more for the same price or less? yep, you guessed it.

I'm not knocking Panasonic, if they want to design and market this camera then that's up to them, but all these gushing reviews without any balance or a common sense angle for the more modest enthusiasts. It's as if these channels assume all their viewers have deep pockets and can just add whatever camera they fancy to their limitless collection. Most people won't choose it because it lacks features they want, flexibility they need, and they simply can't afford the luxury.

As usual, I think, the truth will be somewhere in the middle. Yes, it's been very well received, but then the backlash started. It's a camera, it either fits the bill, or it doesn't. It's not the end of the world.

I believe most/all new camera launches polarize opinions. In reality, the only opinion which matters is that of the buyer, the one who actually pays for the camera.

It's not really about the L10 though, is it?

It's about the integrity - or lack of - of YouTubers.

Several have gone down in my estimation in the past couple of weeks.

When challenged in comments, none address the issue of being 'bought' or influenced.

Some mention in their videos that they were flown to Japan (which is not unusual), and argue that their reviews are independent etc etc, but almost all fail to mention that they were GIVEN a $1300 camera to KEEP.

That's effectively being paid. You wouldn't be human if that didn't affect your opinion.

Receiving a gift is not allowed in US media, at the BBC or any reputable publisher here.

Of course, YouTubers don't answer to a publisher. They work for themselves. Or, in this case, for Panasonic. They're certainly not working to serve viewers first.

"Fuji should be worried" - I mean, honestly!

Again, let's see what genuine purchasers/reviewers think of this camera.

Reviewers' opinions so far are pretty worthless.

We will indeed. I would hope that if it proves to be a success you would moderate your opinion somewhat. Because at the moment I'm struggling to understand your hostility.

I don't like this form of marketing, that's all. It doesn't serve me (the public).

Nothing against Panasonic. I have many of their products.

Whatever you're looking at you check out the reviews and the spec's, compare it to the competition, think about any relevant previous experience and make a decision. For some people that wiil result in the purchase of the L10. It doesn't fit into any niche of mine and I'm a big Lumix fan but that's not to say it won't have its followers.
