Panasonic TZ10 low light blotches - normal?

Hi,

I'll try to put up my own samples later, but is it normal for the camera to produce images with yellow blotches in low light at iso 400 and above?

I thought that modern P and S cameras had come a long way since my Sony P200, but I'm very disappointed with the low light capabilities of the TZ10.

In bright light at ISO 80/100 the images are pretty good, but there is a quite a lot of smoothing, whcih I should be able to sort out to some extent with tweaking the settings.

I've bought it for a Florida trip as Crhistmas, so I'm sure it will be fine outdoors, and the lens/zoom are great. Its just indoors /low light that worries me.

Does anyone else have the TZ10 or the TZ8? (I think the TZ7 handles low light better), and do you get similar images?

I just want to know the camera is not faulty, in which case it can go back to Amazon, but I'm probably expecting too much compared to my lowly sony A200.

I don't think it's actually faulty, I think it's just what you get as the ISO goes up.

Maybe someone else can suggest something better but compacts are normally pretty crap once you twiddle the ISO up.

Yes, that's what I thought. shame really because if this had a bigger/better sensor then it would be really special.
 
If you are looking to change to get better higher ISO performance maybe someone can express an opinion on the likes of the LX5 and other higher end (and slightly larger) compacts.

Other than something like that I suppose that the next level would be a GF1 or similar.

Thanks, those are very nice, but I'm probably at my price limit - with £30 cashback and a spurious £10 discount fomr Amazon it was only £167! I think this is as good as its likely to get for under £200 - with a nice zoom and manual features.
 
You could always use some clever noise reduction or just live with it and convert the badly affected shots to mono. They'd probably look good as mono shots.

I'll probably look into noise reduciton, as I don't think sunny Flordia will be as nice in B&W :-)
