Panasonic TZ10 video files?

My wife has got a TZ10 to replace her aging Canon ixus. She records quite a few clips of our son.

The canon used to record in AVI and she used to view them on her laptop.

The TZ10 records in MOV and so I'm presuming she has to view them on quicktime. Anyone have a good quick and free convertor from Mov to AVI??

Also I'm presuming the best video method on the TZ10 is motion Jpeg over the other options?
 
You don't need Quicktime, you can use VLC to play back the *.mov files (and most other video formats) without needing to install any codecs.

If you want to convert to avi I'd recommend this freeware:

Unlike many other video conversion tools this one doesn't actually re-encode the video so there's no quality loss, it simply changes the container from mov to avi.

The other video option on the TZ10 is AVCHD which offers the advantage of much better compression while keeping the same quality, this means you can record more HD footage in the same amount of storage and possibly have longer recording times. The downside to AVCHD files is that they're not as easy to play back and generally require transcoding to another format although VLC should be able to handle 720p AVCHD files on a PC with reasonable hardware.

Thanks John that's very helpfull. I wouldn't bother but it makes it easier for my Mrs to use with one media player rather than a couple :)

The other small issue I noted was on playback. We recorded a couple of small clips took the card out and viewed them from the SD card slot on her laptop. SDHC class 6 extreme 3 sandisc. It was stuttering.

I transfered the file to the desktop and the file plays fine. Surely a class 6 is fast enough for video to be read from?
 
Of course, I can definitely appreciate that. If you need to it also makes the files easier to edit in most editing applications which is why I use the software to convert the files. I've never understood why *.mov is so standard with camera video files rather than a standard format like *.avi

A class 6 SD card is definitely fast enough to read video from so I'd point the finger at the laptop's card reader instead, I find some laptops using internal USB devices don't run as fast as they should.

In my memory, Panasonic TZ10 is capable of recording 720P avchd lite videos, which has a higher resolution than mov recording. Just wanna watch tz10 mov on mac with quicktime pro, you can convert it to aic mov or a playable h.264 mov, or avi, mp4. For free converter, they can only support some mov files, for mov from camcorder, they can not make a good conversion, the following software provide free trial, but it can help convert mov to aiv, you can have a try.
