Thought I'd pop the Siggy 150-500 on the 50D and see what I could spot on this afternoons dog walk so I took the 70-200 off then spotted the top LCD was live so I turned the camera off, popped the 150-500 on, turned it on.......nothing! Nada, LCD blank!!! :eek:
Took the batteries out of the grip, popped them back in....nowt!
Took the grip off, popped in a single different battery....zilch!!
Gulp!!
Battery out, coin cell out, cell in, battery in.....our survey says UH UH!!
Spent the entire dog walk moping about, wondering how much it's going to cost me to get repaired. :'(
Got home, took the cover off another battery, popped it in......woohoo! :D
Lesson learned, when you have 9 spare batteries, keep track of which ones are charged! ;)
I reckon by pure coincidence, when I changed the lens with the body turned on I may have inadvertently pressed the back button which caused the very last bit of power from the batteries in the grip to be used when the body came off of standby.
Phew!! :lol:
 
sounds like you got a free blood pressure and heart check. I did the same with a 'scratch' on the front element of an expensive lens....how did it get there? oh no:bang:

Then had a reason to clean it with a damp cloth and it came straight off. :bonk:
 
Yep, things like that certainly get your heart rate up a bit! :lol:
I'm usually very meticulous about turning the body off for lens, battery and card swaps but I'd left it on so it had gone into standby.
 
Quite a while back i decided to try out back button focussing on my 7d so into the menus and a few clicks later back button set up. Tried it and liked it. Used my Nikon for the next 2 weeks. Back to the 7d and forgot what i had done. Spent a scary 15 minutes at the start of a shoot thinking my 7d focussing had packed in (frantically tried all my lenses with the same results - nada) You guessed it, i was trying to focus using the shutter button half press. Then it dawned on me and when i pushed the back button ? Voila all good. Pff! Who needs laxatives.
 
I seem to recall I had a similar experience with a 40d I bought off here! Spent ages trying to suss out why it wasn't working properly.
 
Best tip I've been given regarding batteries...when you take one out of the charger wrap an elastic band around it. That way you always know which ones are fully charged.
 
Last week was my second outing with the 7D. Whilst getting off the bus I dropped my bag, when I did turn on my camera it was only showing on the screen and it wouldn't let me take a picture only video. I thought my camera was stuck in video mode, I spent the next hour reading through the manual trying to solve it and trying to get a Internet connection to google it.
I was all ready to jump on a bus to go to the camera shop when I noticed a switch on the back, flicked that and voila I could take pictures. :bonk:
 
I have those little round red and green circular stickers on the bottom of al my BP511's, so that the green one shows through the hole in the battery cover when I've charged it, but I put it on the other way so the red one shows through when it's flat. :thumbs:
I try to have at least one spare green one with me when I take the camera out.

I do something very similar - but without the red sticker :D. I bought a load of 3rd party battery covers which didn't have a hole already in them (an enterprising bloke had a job-lot made up to fit his cover-less 3rd party batteries and sold the remainder on ebay) - so I drilled out a hole in each cover.

I didn't realise how mucky the terminals are until I took this photo :gag:

I have marked the bottom of the batteries and tend to turn the covers so I can see if they're charged or not but not all of my batteries have covers.
As to why I have 9 batteries? I bought a couple of spares when I had my 40D and kept hold of them when I sold it, I then bought a grip that came with 4 more and have since bought two more genuine ones off here....because they were cheap. :lol:

I did have a Doh! Moment this morning when I realised why the single one I tried in the body probably didn't work either.........I'd removed the grip but hadn't refitted the battery door! :bonk:
 
I had a similar 'moment' with my 5D2 with BBF. I'd tried setting it on the 5D2 and the 7D and for some reason the 7D didn't like it (nearly always misfocussed) but the 5D2 was spot on. I'd been shooting with the 7D for a couple of days straight and picked up the 5D2 and couldn't for the life of me work out why it didn't focus when I pressed the shutter button. I thought it was only me having one of those 'senior' moments but it seems I'm not alone. Phew!

Now I've got a 5D3 and a different 7D and both are spot on with BBF so I don't have any problems now.

As for batteries, I've got 10 LP-E6's that go in pairs into the grips on both bodies and always keep the orange back plate on the charged ones. When they die and I'm on location I put the spent ones in a plastic bag without the back plate so I know they aren't to go back in the camera. It's a system that's never failed me yet!
