Panning advice

I have been asked by a friend to take some shots of his sports car tomorrow which I am very happy to do I only hope I can do the car justice with my shots.

I currently have a nikon D7000 with 50mm f.14 and a 18-200mm.

I would like to do some panning shots and would like to seek some advice.

I don't know the location as yet so am thing my best lens to take along for the panning shots will be the zoom, I plan to put the camera in AF-C with a single focus point and use shutter priority of 1/60sec to start with and shoot continuous high. Would I need to put the lenses VR on and would I set this to normal or active?, I know the shutter speed will depend on the speed of the car and will adjust as necessary

Any additional advice would be greatly appreciated.

You seem to have got most things covered there.
The faster the car is moving the easier panning is so just hope the shoot is somewhere suitable.

There is a good guide to panning in the tutorial section, I'm on my phone or I'd get you the link.
Oh, set the metoring to spot or centre weighted.

Stand facing the end of the pan, then turn your upper body towards the start of it.

I dont know if it was me or not but I had difficulty panning with VR on. When I turned it off it got better.

Like I say, may just be me though

Thanks all for the advice will see how things turn out, if I get any decent shots I will post them up.

Nikon recommend that you leave VR switched to Normal when panning and I've had good success with that when shooting cyclists - much slower I know. Once the shutter speed gets much above 1/200s I find VR has little effect, if any.

If you have VR switched on remember to give it time to settle before tripping the shutter or it's likely that all the shots you take in one go will be OOF as it hunts between shots. This is worse when using CS-H.

Hope that helps :)
