...hello boys and girls.

I'm off to the Pamirs without my tripod and want to take some panoramic photos which will have to be handheld which will be stiched togethor. What software shall i use and what kind of technique shall i use to take them!

what camera you got, Canon have their own photostitch software which is piddle easy, I took 5 shots handheld last week that resulted in...

too easy..

is there a function on the camera that you use to help you line up the shots, or does the software detect were overlaps occur?

Remember to shoot with manual exposure, manual white balance, and preferably manual focus too. You want the settings identical from one shot to the next.

manual everything so it doesnt change between shots. forget abt using CPL filters too as they will band as you move.

I use photoshop cs3's photomerge to put my shots together. just select the bunch in bridge cs3 and fire up the tool from there.

also, if your using a lens at wide angle, be careful of distortion. one way to minimize is to shoot with the lens in opposite format to your intended shot format i.e. for a panoramic landscape shoot portrait and vice versa. you'l need to take more shots though!

Another vote for Hugin. Here's a 12 shot panorama I took hand-held across Wimbledon's Centre Court recently:
