Why is the favoured ratio for panoramic shots 3:1? I assume 3:1 came about as the standard panoramic ratio due to it being half the 3:2 of a 35mm image, or is it a bit more conviluted?
I find that ratio to be way too long, and generally cuts details out in the foreground and background, whereas smaller ones (say 2:1) allow much more detail and interest. I think partly due to what our eye actually sees, when I look around I see (I think) in pretty much 2:1 ratio, and so image wise it is much nicer to look at?
Random question I know, but processing a load of landscape images/panoramics, I have looked at both 3:1 and 2:1 ratios and found in almost every instance 2:1 was superior (to my eye).
