panoramic with dslr

going back a few years when i was pretty scared of going into the world of dslrs i used the point and shoot cameras..... i used to love taking very wise panoramics, where effectively 3 shots were taken and stitched together giving a low quality in comparison image to a dslr, but some good images never the less....


i was watching something on you tube yesterday, got half way through before kids started playing up and and then after sorting that of finding the kids had turned the computer off leaving me struggling and subsequently unable to refind it again to find out more....


it was a fella with a canon body, with a wide lens, that seemed to take an exposure, and then whilst still fixed to a tripod, the lens seemed to slide along across the camera body before taken another exposure.....

A) was i imagining it....

B) if i wasnt (hopefully i wasnt) would it give the panoramic equivalent to my point and shoot (by stitching images - good quality)- or was it just a gimmick lens similar to one of those lensbaby lens- more for a style creation photo???

C)what is/was it called??


D) if i was imagining it- some advice on medication i need to take might come in handy

if you go onto your computer and look in your history you should be able to find the video there, then post a link here as it sounds interesting

tried that- history seems to get deleted at the end of each session

its really driving me mad!! i've either seen something really handy and potentially worthwhile or im going mad

Or you could just use a dslr the same way you would your p&s, take lots of images and stitch them together.

It sounds from your description they might have been using a Tilt-Shift lens which can be used to create a panorama - have a read here to see if that is similar to what you saw.

this looks pretty similar if it wasnt it..... much appreciated!!! will have to do some research into them, but at first glance they're mega money!!

Sounds very much like a tilt/shift lens.

3rd the tilt and shift lens. Primarily used as an architectural lens but can be used to take landscapes. When you stitch the images together each image does not have to be corrected for perspective and lens distortion, and lens vignetting will not be uneven between images, but a tilt & shift lens is very expensive. Cheaper option would be a panoramic tripod head and standard lens

I suspect it was a panoramic tripod head like a Nodal Ninja.

I use one with a Siggy 8mm on a crop body then stitch together with PTGUI.
4 around, one up (zenith) one down (Nadir), sometimes I use HDR.

I prefer to make 360 panos. I haven't done enough lately to improve any.
