Password problem on old laptop

I have a very old laptop that has not been used for about 5 years. It runs on Windows 98 and I was trying to access it earlier. I have tried every password that I thought I had used in the past 6 / 7 years but cannot seem to get the correct one. Is there any way that I can access my user workspace without the correct password or am I doomed to be trying everything I can think of for a very long time? What is really annoying is I was able to access other users but not my own.

Already been at it for ages :(

Any help or advice appreciated.

Yes, but you'll need another computer to work on while the laptop is out of action.

You'll need to borrow or buy a 2.5" HDD caddy; they're readily available for around £15. You'll then remove the HDD from the laptop, slot it in to the caddy, attach that to the other computer and you'll be able to access all the files on the drive without having to enter a password.

Makes a mockery of the security but it'll solve your problem.
 
Cheers for the advice. Sorted now. Haven't a clue what happened there. It was a passord that I was using a while ago and had tried. Accepted this time after I restarted the system. Didn't have Caps Lock on by mistake so do not really know what the problem was but I am in now.

I know you've sorted it now, but I thought I'd reply in case someone else with the same problem looks at this thread.

If you downlaod an app called ERD commander you can make a bootable disk, which modifies the OS. it'll let you change any admin passwords/network settings etc without having to provide any sort of username.
