Hi, I see above there is a section for stolen items and although not seen myself is it possible to password protect your camera?
You can do your computer, mobile phone etc etc
would it not be a good idea to allow you to also do it with your camera so to be able to release the shutter button for example a password required.
Cannot be that difficult to include in firmware.
Just an idea!!!

Unfortunately if this did happen then not long after somebody would offer a service to unlock for a few quid just like with car radios and mobile phones.

True..

My camera.. dont know how many others? allows me to embedd my copyright info into the pictures as they are taken.. OK this can be changed.. but your average thief wouldnt have a clue what i am talking about.. its a start.. you could search for pictures taken with your stolen gear :)

Stolen camera finder does this by serial number already. DigitalRev were caught selling the 5d MkIII review copy as new with this. :D
 
I've put the copyright info in all the bodies I've had but never had a body stolen. I think if they came up with a way to put a pin code into the camera it would make it less desirable to anyone thinking of taking one. It would be even better if they could find a way to show if it's been unlocked/tampered when the camera is started. That way it would be obvious if it were a stolen. It might cause some problems when it comes to buying second hand bodies if there was no way to reset the code though.

It's pointless because there has to be a way to get around it in case the password is forgotten. In the case of something like a mobile phone or computer this can involve wiping or formatting the device completely which at least means they won't get at your data but, with a camera, there's no adverse effect to this at all so they could just reset the whole thing and away they go.
 
A built in gps that can be easily traced by police if needed would solve it, plus put away the thief's at the same time.

That hasn't exactly deterred anyone from nicking smartphones!

If a thief wants your camera, they'll have it - deterents or not.

The best counter measure is vigilance.

However it's not hugely useful as it lacks support from a lot of sites.

If Facebook and Twitter images were compatible with stolen camera finder it would be an invaluable tool.

I bet 99% of stolen cameras are then used to take photos and upload them onto said sites.

How many thieves use Flickr? I'd say far far less. I don't know many people in real life that use Flickr (only 'photographer' friends), it just doesn't have the numbers compared to FB/TW.

Yeah, that and a Magnum .45 pistol sticking out your pocket would help deterring them.

Or as Matt said, a reasonable amount of C4 and a remote detonator would convince most people not to nick it. :lol:
 
i suppose a pin required every time you change the battery wouldn't be too much of a hindrance but as already said it wouldn't take too long for people to be offering pin removal / reset services

i think there's room for a website that searches images by EXIF for anybody with the knowledge and willing to take up the challenge :)
