I prefer the processing of the second one but I would try and process out the bit of halo that has developed in the processing

How do you go about removing that? I suppose what I'm asking is what aspect of processing causes halos like that? Is it contrast?

Truth be told I'm not always sure the cause but I have found over doing contrast to be the primary cause in my photo's

Huh - how odd - it's there in the original RAW (well, NEF in this case) file. It seems to be an artifact of the black pawn, the bright white light and the pale background. I assume the exposure must have been off. A lesson learned.
