Pc issues with surfing on net

Ok I have an iPad and a windows based laptop. iPad when connected to the net is super fast when surfing. Laptop dial up speed slow. Got no viruses on machine and everything is up to date and it's a new machine 8 months old. Any ideas what might be problem.
 
Have you tried a different browser?
 
Hi have 64bit version of ie and Firefox same slowness on both
 
Suggest you check your preferences in your browsers, check which programmes are running, check your av/spware software settings - all could cause a slowdown.

Like you, I have a pc and a mac, so currently i'm using the mac all the time. The pc is earmarked for the steps in the article, starting with a full back-up and followed by a fresh install...
Fortunately I have a pal who fixes pc's in his spare time so he'll be holding my hand (nice!) when i do it...
 
All drivers are up to date, will try suggestions in your link later.

You haven't said what version of windows. Also what anti virus and any addin firewalls.

Wireless or wired? If the former try a network cable and see if it improves. Also try disabling ipv6, that can cause issues on older routers.

Those would be my starters for 10.

Running windows 7 and nod32 all drivers are up to date. No additional firewall in place. And laptop is connected via wi-fi connection.
 
I will try hardwiring it tonight but it's really bloody annoying
 
Click on the network icon in the system tray, right click the wireless network connection and select Status. What speed does it say it is connected at?

I have found that a wee bit hit or miss, it certainly can tell you it has excellent strength when it isn't.

The reason is to see whether it is connected to the router at a good speed. Sometimes the adapter driver can set a silly Tx Rate. An adapter on an old laptop kept reducing the rate down to 1mbps for no real reason (it should only do so when signal is low), meaning a very slow connection.
 
Just to be clear, I am talking about the Tx Rate/Link speed, not signal strength. Link speed is accurate.
 
It just gives the Tx-Rate. There is nothing more to it. It's not the actual speed at which you can tranfer data from the router, obviously.

If it's at 1mbps, you know there is something wrong with the way the Tx-Rate is being set. If it is at 54mbps then it is likely to be fine and is going to be another issue...
 
first time using machine since posting on here about problem and tonight its flying through the pages.......
 
ok hardwired pc to router and no hesitation or slowness so does this mean that its the pc at fault? any other tests i can do before sending off laptop for repair?
 
Any idea what Wi-Fi hardware your PC is using? Has it always been sluggish or just recently?
 
No idea what wifi hardware on laptop it's actually an 8 month old Vaio laptop. Always had issues with slowness when surfing but just thought it was the modem or something.
 
first off check for anything that could be interferring with your wireless near the router. this could be something like, a power transformer, anything with a motor, cordless telephone etc.
 
Neil modem sits on glass shelf under tv DVD player on one side and sky box on the other.
