Perhaps a little bit more info?

What Operating System are you using? What happens when you try and open a picture? Is there an error message? If so, what does it say?

By "any type", what image formats have you tried?
 
I will assume then that you have tried to open images in JPEG, PNG, GIF formats.

Do any photo previews appear?

Try opening MS Paint, and opening a picture in it. Does the picture load in paint?
 
Yes I tried them. Nothing at all shows in preview or thumbnails work either. They do open up in paint but out of a set of pics I don't know what I'm opening until I open it as I can't see.
 
Which version of XP are you using? Is it full up to date with SP3?

The problem is with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, a suggested method for uninstalling and reinstalling it is here:

Press the start button in the bottom left corner of your screen.

A start menu should pop up.

Click on "Run" on that start menu.

When the little box pops up, type this in the white part of the box:

regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll

A process should start.

When that process has completed,

Click on Start, then Run... and type in:

regsvr32 /i %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll

This should reinstall the Windows Fax and Picture Viewer on your computer.

I have not tested this, I can't guarantee it will work. However, the command looks fine for it.
