PC port on the Canon 580ex ii

I'm wondering what the pc port on my canon 580ex ii actually dose, can any one enlighten me.

it's so you can fire the flash via a pc sync lead that connects to the camera model dependant .

NP if you dont have a pc socket on you camera you can buy a hot shoe to pc adaptor at use that instead . Also welcome to the forum .
