Ok, so I've had the current machine for about 9 years. It was a top of the range HP pavilion at the time and has served me well. I have been toying with replacing it but have now started wondering if I might be able to upgrade some of the components to eek a little more life out of it. It has a 1gb memory but will take another 1gb. What other cost-effective upgrades would you suggest? Is upgrading the memory the best first step?

I'm not that PC minded but I am reasonably technically astute so might need some help along the way...

The machine is used for the gimp plus the usual browsing, email, the odd office doc/presentation.

What would you suggest?
 
9 years old? Time to get a newer machine IMHO.

Sounds like time for another machine.

Another 1 Gb of memory might speed it up a little and if it has no Video card then a real cheapo one might give a little more boost by freeing up the CPU a little but apart from that the only other way would be a fster HDD.

But overall these aren't really cost effective on an older machine.

If you have any computer fairs near you (if there are any still going) then you can usually pick up some bargains there if you know what you're looking for.

Thanks, It's a HP Pavillion, Pentium 4, 3ghz, 1gb. Not sure how to find out if it has a vid card or any other specs.
 
At nine years old there is probably not a lot that can be salvaged usefully.

However, if you are happy building one yourself then you could use the case (assuming it is a standard format one).

If you do, check the size of any power supply and graphics card you buy. Some current PSUs will not necessarily fit the space in an old case and some graphics cards are huge and can foul the hard drive bays.

Many of the PC suppliers do motherboard bundles which can be a help for self builds.

If your monitor, keyboard and mouse are OK, then you can save a bit there.
