Hi all,

I recently bought a new card reader, because I feared my old one was faulty as it wouldnt read SD cards...however the new one is no different!

It is a brand new Trust 7 in one card reader with SDHC support.

I can plug a CF card into it and it pops up in windows explorer, but the SDHC card doesnt show at all.

It has a blue light on the front indicating a card has been detected, but nothing happens after that.

I have checked in device mgmt and disk management, and the SD card is not showing at all.

FWIW the SD card works fine in my camera so I know its not a duff card.

Any tips?

Thank you :)

Can you try another computer?

Just trying to think what could be common to both readers... cable, usb socket on PC....

I agree it defies logic but I'd try a different cable too :)

If the camera works with the card then it is already formatted. There will be somewhere in the camera menu to format it again if you want to. Formatting will erase the card.

in my experience XP is fairly fast to recognise a card plugged in but Vista can take up to a minute to realise it is there and windows 7 is just a bit slower than XP. Apart from leaving it connected a little longer I'm out of ideas.

Do you know someone with their own SD cards and working reader that could try your cards and you try theirs?

If all the cards are sdhc it is likely that the card reader just isn't compatible. You can buy a new sdhc USB reader for under five pounds from Amazon.

I also tried the card reader in another PC, and it didnt detect the SD card either.

Hi

Obvious question, but you are putting the SD card in the correct way in the reader ???

Lol yes, definitely inserted correctly. The blue LED on one of my readers lights up to indicate its prescene, but windows doesnt respond

Good, just thought I'd ask to make sure, I know I have to double check when inserting a SD card in compared to a CF

So are any of the cards 2Gb or less ie not sdhc?

Funnily enough, I got a laptop today with an inbuilt SD card reader, tried it, and it reads the card no problem - it makes that typical Windows beep when first inserted and works fine.
Tried it again in my PC with all 3 of my external card readers (all different) and nothing.

Weird or what!

What windows are you running ?
Are you running an anti-virus ?

Is the auto run from an external drive disabled ? Is your anti-virus blocking it ??

Its a 16GB SDHC card (I also have various other SD cards (non SDHC) but they also dont work in windows)

Windows 7 Ultimate
Yes, AVG - but never had any trouble with it preventing opening of things before as I have it set to bare minimum interference
Auto run is enabled on everything

The card reader works fine with CF, just not with SD

The card readers working as CF cards work and you can read the SD cards on your laptop, so they're working okay, you've tried other card readers on your pc and same results with the SD cards...

Hmmm puzzled now, sorry ....

Will have a think

With a 5D2 and big files on CF you might be tempted to get a nice fast Lexar reader to save transfer time. It has a SD slot too if you want to try yet another reader

Where did you get the card reader from ? Can you return it to the shop and maybe try it there ? Try another one ?

Just wondering if it's not SDHC comparable
