PCI Card for MAC?

I have an old (ish) Power Mac G4 at work that only has USB 1. As you can imagine it is painfully slow for data transfer.

I've bought a generic PCI USB2.0 - 4 port card and installed it. It shows up quite happily in system profiler under "PCI Cards" and also shows under "USB Hub". However, when I plug any external drive / memory stick etc into it, it doesn't respond or mount :(

Have I made a mistake in buying a generic PCI card? ie should I have bought a MAC specific card, if such a thing exists? Or is there likely to be another reason for the problem?

Any help or advice appreciated :)

Yeah I realise that but I'm talking about external drives that are mac formatted and already used on the G4 :)
 
MacOS will often recognise devices plugged into the PCI or PCIe slots BUT that does not mean that it will know what to do with them. What you need is a device that uses a USB chip that APPLE use or preferably something that actually says MacOS X compatible.
