Yes
I know quite a few folks here like PCSpecialist for PCs (and they have been around for a few years, which might be an indication of their quality) but does anyone have any views on the laptops PCSpecialist make?

I'm after new laptop and some of their deals look reasonable and they supply a physical copy of the OS.

Thanks

Dave

Their builds are pretty good to be fair.
Do you have a budget in mind and will this laptop be for photo editing?

What deals were you looking at specifically?

The last laptop I bought was from them.
Major problems from the off. I had to change the keyboard (Lots of premium rate calls) but problems wouldn't go away. Eventually they took machine back and replaced motherboard and ancillaries. Then it worked just fine. Still got it but don't use it now.
I would consider them again because they did try to sort the machine. Just a problem with the components, but who is to blame for that?

I wouldn't touch them. I bought one from them about 18 months ago, the laptop case was the cheapest cheap thing I've ever seen, had problems from the off with the hardware drivers which I had to send it back for fixing. About a year on the screen hinge started to crack and the screen would display weird colours unless positioned carefully. I phoned them about this a few times but they kept fobbing me off, about a month ago it gave up altogether and so did I. I now have a refurbished HP which at least has a decent case and screen.

My advice would be to stick to 'branded' laptops, Lenovo, DELL, HP or similar. The spares for generic laptops are often difficult/impossible to obtain a year or two into ownership......

I worked for a very large IT company which ran outsourced IT contracts, getting spares for a clients generic laptops (and some cheaper brands) was an absolute nightmare, we generally swapped failing units for new Lenovo units as it was easier & quicker than trying to find spare parts outside the warranty period.

Thanks for the replies all.

The one I was looking at had the following spec -

UltraNote: 15.6" Matte Full HD IPS LED Backlit Widescreen (1920x1080)

Intel® Core™ i5 Quad Core Processor 7300HQ (2.5GHz, 3.5GHz Turbo)

8GB Corsair 2133MHz SODIMM DDR4 (1 x 8GB)

INTEL® HD GRAPHICS 620 - 1.7GB Max DDR4 Video RAM - DirectX® 12

500GB SERIAL ATA III 2.5" HARD DRIVE WITH 32MB CACHE (7,200rpm)

8x SATA DVD±R/RW/Dual Layer (+ 24x CD-RW)

for £632,

The laptop isn't for photo work at all.

Think I might re-think where I buy from.

Cheers

Dave

We bought a fairly cheap laptop from them for my then 16 year old daughter for college. It has been used, abused and never given any care or maintenance, but still goes on without any problems. I would buy from them again...
I don't remember the spec or price, but it was one of the cheapest they made and has always impressed me with its speed and weight for the money.

To be honest I've always found Dell to be competitive on price, great support on their website and brilliant support with engineers when it goes wrong.

PC Specialists laptops are like old Volvo's........Dull looking, not very exciting but actually bloody good. My son has one and it performs very well and has been super reliable.

I have a PC from them that is still going strong after 6 years. I have ordered a new PC from them which is the Intel NUC Skull Canyon which you usually have to supply and fit the SSD , Ram and OS yourself. PC Specialists will build it for you for not much more than doing it yourself. Go PC Specialists.
