Hi there, l've just gotten a Pentax 645NII medium format SLR.
There's a C-S switch for autofocus mode - it's on the top left corner of the rear of the camera.

C = continuous autofocus mode (quote p. 58 of the user manual: "If the shutter release button is held at the halfway position, the lens focuses continuously to follow the subject. The shutter can be released even if the subject is out of focus.")

S = single autofocus mode (quote p. 33 of the user manual: "When you depress the shutter button, the lens automatically focuses. As soon as the subject is in focus, the shutter is released. For normal use, select this position. The shutter cannot be released if the subject is out of focus.")

All good, but l have a manual focus lens attached, and the C-S switch is locked on S, it won't budge.

Question: Is the C-S switch locked because there's no actual autofocus lens attached to speak of?

Further question: when loaded with a blank film cartridge, a motor is heard continuously whirring, with a brief pause say every 1 second or so. This appears to be a film winding motor. Is it meant to do this? Does it change behaviour once the cartridge is loaded with actual film?

Mini update: I think the permanent rewind is a known issue, some component in the film rewinding mechanism is stuck.
