Beyond the colours, it should be a seriously good camera. It's more or less the same inside as the k-30 and I've found that to be an absolutely cracking camera.

yep, this is where I sometimes feel its a shame, over the past 4 odd years I have been through every brand if all levels and in a like for like situation Pentax are absolutely superb and by far the best value for money in each class of camera they make yet they seem to feel they have to offer more than this to compete.

I moved to Pentax because I fell in love with the 50-135 2.8 and rank it amongst one of the best lenses ever but now I have been with Pentax a while there is so much more I like than just that lens.

I agree, the K30 is supposedly comparable to the D7000 but a few hundred pound cheaper. But the only way they can compete with Canon and Nikon is on price but I don't think it's working. I think I've only ever seen one photographer with a Pentax when out and about and he was a Chinese tourist. I don't really know what they can do to improve their sales and reputation though, I don't know much about them but do they make pro-level bodies and lenses? Comparable to the 1DX and the high end L lenses?

The link in the first posts is dead. Seen them on some photo site earlier though, fugly is the right word for them I feel.

plenty of chatter at the minute about Pentax announcing a FF offering but currently nothing to compete full on at pro level..

that aside I use a K-5II as my main and will also be picking up K-5IIs(doesnt have an AA filter) and they are stunning cameras..

Pentax DA* and LTD lenses are some of the best I have known, I could not be without the DA* 50-135 2.8, its awesome for weddings.

Pentax have not really tried to enter the pro market since the LX in 1980 and that system was a true pro's system with interchangable prisms, screens, weather sealing (unique at the time), electronic and mechanical shutter speeds, an incredibly sensitive meter (calculates up to 125 seconds!) etc.

To be honest I think that with the stranglehold that Nikon and Canon have on the pro market and have done for decades, I don't think its worth Pentax trying to re-enter although nothing says that they can't get a truly excellent high end model together that could be popular amongst enthusiasts or semi-pro's if its marketed right.

I think they have to try and do something, theyre missing out on the pro market and the mirrorless market, although theyve released the MX-1 its not really a great option with the X20 and RX100 about, its also pretty lacking giving how late they entered, it does look nice though. Their designs of the cameras are also questionable, the K30 looks pretty horrible to me regardless of how it performs yet the MX-1 looks really nice.
Oh and the colours for the K-50 is a bit gimmicky given the target audience, its not really entry level at £529.00 and is apparently aimed directly at mid-level buyers, I cant see them wanting it in yellow.

The K-500 is the entry level body (only differs from the K-50 in not being weather sealed or having an electronic level) being priced at £449 although thats bound to drop fairly quick.

I know the K-500 is entry-level but that one only comes in black strangely. Surely they shouldve made the K-500 colourful and the K-50 not?

Pentax do have a high end camera - the 645D, let's not forget Pentax have had a presence in the medium format camera segment for decades.

The K-5 might be lagging is areas behind the D300s and 7D but it is a joyful camera to use and the Pentax lenses price for price are as every bit as good as their competitors - we Pentaxians lament the lack of fast telephoto lenses yet baulk at the price point of the DA560..... can't win...

FYI I think SRS still have stocks of the K-5 at less than £500.

maybe there way into pro stuff will be with medium format, i think cannokia are too well established now for the pro stuff, and they can afford to offer a huge variety of lenses.

where pentax big in the film days? i thought they where but i dunno for sure :\

I could never figure this out about Pentax ... other companies, like Fuji, have the ability to bring out 'retro' style cameras, that look great! Pentax have never really made a good looking camera IMO, they started out a bit ugly, and never really improved. Of course, I know, looks aren't everything, in fact they mean nothing ... but when you have to hold the thing all day! ... sorry pentax users, it's just a taste thing. But I've never liked the look of any of their cameras. I think they should take the design guys out back ...

Each to their own. I wouldn't swap the ergonomics of my K5 for any other that I know of, And my Q is just such fun to use

where is that any different to any other mid sized DSLR... for me button placement is pretty much perfection on the K-5II

the k-01 is defo a marmite affair and I am on the love it side, its great to hold great to use, fastest mirrorless camera I have used.

Its worth remembering that the majority of Pentax's DSLR offerings have had or have weather sealing, even the models they made for samsung had weather sealing too.
I found that a real plus point as both Canon & Nikons models around the same price point has no weather sealing at all.

Except the D7000, which was/is a direct competitor for the K-5 (not the K-30 as someone else alluded to above).

Since relatively recent lens price hike, Pentax is not that competitive as a whole system anymore. For anyone who have touched K-7/5, the best in class ergonomics is not questionable though.
