Hello people! I wonder if anyone knows the answer to a query I have? To fill you in first, here's what's going on:

Not too long ago a chap I worked with sadly died, leaving all his camera gear to his neice, who I also work with. She's given me a Sigma 50-500 F4-F6.3. Initially I was struggling to find the camera is was for as I haven't seen a Pentax camera for longer than I care to admit. I've now figured it is indeed a Pentax fit lens thanks to a rep at Sigma that emailed me back, but I'm not sure of it's value. The camera (K-x)was £475 in 2009 so I suppose that's about £100-£150 now? (it's not a nice camera for my size hands and there are no battery grips for this camera according to the manufacturers site, so I may buy a second hand mid range body for it).

*edit* I've managed to get the camera working now. Yay! Finally tested the lens and it's working perfectly. It's got an 86mm Hoya UV filter on it too. From what I can tell it's an old version of the Bigma as it has an aperture dial at the base, but I can't find ANY to compare it with to price it. *edit #2* I've just been told she has the receipt for the lens and it was £1200 from Jessops in 2009 if that's of any help.

Can anyone tell me what this lens is worth? To be honest I think I'll buy it off her, but I don't want to rip her off. I'd appreciate it if someone could let me know as I need to take it back in to work tomorrow. The only ones I've seen on ebay have been sold for about £275 for Pentax mounts, with one other at £440.

Oh, one other thing I wasn't clear on there is that the thing that's throwing me is that there is a dial at the base of the lens to set the aperture to auto, or each individual setting. From every image I've tried to find, the current models don't have this. Is this an older model of the Bigma?
 
Yes it's the older (non OS) version, it has the aperture ring so can also be used on film cameras. On digital it's best left on the A setting and then you can set the aperture via the camera. Value is around £400 if it's in good nick. The K-x was in the lower price range (produces decent IQ though) and is worth around £120.

It's actually a pretty good lens ... I used one before upgrading to the OS version although Pentax have inbody SR so it's not really necessary.

Few taken with mine, I must have taken hundreds (if not thousands) of pics with that lens in the 3 years I had it





 
If she was selling it next weekend I'd have bought it off her. As it is I told her, after looking around, it's worth about £275 as it's not in mint condition but works perfectly. It seems the prices almost halved since the OS version came out. Anyway, it just sold on ebay for £257 so I'm taking it back to work tomorrow.

Now I've got to sort through 40 other lenses she's been left :gag:
 
All the ones I've found recently are selling for £440ish with OS so this was probably about right, given the condition too.
 
No, I'm talking about the 50-500 non OS version. This week I found two OS versions that sold. One for £440 and another that was around £275 but was WELL used. I couldn't even find any auctions for this old non OS type but found some info on a Pentax forum that showed in 2011 the OS versions were selling for $850 second hand in mint condition and again there were no listings for the the non OS. The ones I did find after browsing various forums were canon mounts that sold for more, but the Pentax mounts are seemingly rare as hens teeth. Anyway, at the end of the day, it wasn't mine to sell so I didn't lose out and from the info I've found today on MPB, they only sell them for £330, so it's not a bad price that she got for it.
