pentax k5 sensor problems

It's the D7000 that uses the same sensor, and the Sony a580

Although they may be from the same maker and have similarities, The D7k sensor has a slightly different spec to the K-5 sensor. I believe Thom Hogan says that the Nikon sensor is their own design, whatever that means! Here are some of the differences (from DPReview, compare side by side).

D7k v. K-7

Effective MP - 16.2 v. 16.3
Sensor size - 23.1 x 15.4 mm (3.55 cm²) v. 23.7 x 15.7 mm (3.72 cm²)
Pixel Density - 4.6 MP/cm² v. 4.4 MP/cm²

But both seem to have some early QC issues, that's why I've never been keen on being an early adopter, but hey, someone has to do the beta testing!

As a long time Pentax user until early this year, I have a soft spot for their gear, but not their QC in recent times. I personally prefer the D300s sensor to either the K-5 or D7k (I have tried both), it just seems to have better colour and overall rendering with the RC's that I regularily use (NX, Silkypix Pro and LR3).

as for pentax richard, i to have used pentax dslr for the past ten years, and was a member on pentaxuser, and have had the k7 which was not good, i have 2 d300 now and cant wait for the d400 to come out.

As a current Pentax K20D owner I'm seriously looking at the K5 as my next upgrade. As with many new models from all manufacturers early customers seem to become unofficial testers - despite the current issues, which I'm sure are frustrating for early owners, I'm pretty sure the K5 is/will be a great camera - it appears to be the first Pentax that is able to compete with the "big boys"

I have no worried about it .. I am sure either Mifsuds (from where it was purchased) or Pentax will sort the problem out.

Until then I will just carry on using it.

Hmmmm .........

Looks like oil splatter - probably needs a clean. I had a few similar looking spots on my new D700 and a quick clean later and all was fine.

Another PentaxUser reject here - I also had a hard time liking the K7 and switched to a D700. No complaints.

The QC issues I had on the K7 were very frustrating (Pentax/dealer did try everything though) and the IQ was not really all that either - when it worked properly that is.

i know what you mean mike, but it might be worth just phoning and asking for a brand ne one now, as you have not had it very long.

Well, not quite - £899 vs £1699 at the time - but the issues simply convinced me to change and when you have got over the initial resistance to the idea, you look at your options and the D700 with a free grip was only £300 more than the equivalent D300s.

The K7 had a wonderful user interface, but was no better IQ wise than the K20 and I had a major failure of the SR mechanism that never got fully resolved.

The K5 on the other hand is the best of both worlds. Great UI and great sensor and provided you get a working camera, is probably destined to go down as a classic. I never had a single issue with my *istD, K10 or K20 so I think I was just very unlucky with my K7. C'est la vie.

I think the D700 is the one Nikon I would be happy to use, from what I have seen the IQ is outstanding whereas the D300/s is ok but doesn't in the least bit tempt me .

Saying that the 5D MKII produces some fantastic looking pictures but again the 7D I had on loan for a while was (imo) nothing special IQ wise.

Would miss the crop factor if I went FF though.

Sorry to hear that though, it's always a bummer when your pride and joy develops a fault of some kind.
The K-5 certainly looks like a nice body though.
