Yes
who are you all using for hosting?? im looking to set my own up soon but searching google is proving to be a never ending hole of people who will host.

i could do with being pointed in the right direction of who to go for and what to look for before i choose anyone.

site would be mainly a gallery obviously but a few information pages like contact info and all that jazz.

sorry about this as its probably been covered a million times, but i really am stuck and dont know where to start looking

Hi Matt,

I use Webmania http://www.webmania.co.uk/

I have been with them since 2002 and have never had any problems.

1Gb web space and 12Gb traffic per month, Unlimited pop3 email addresses, unlimited sub-domains etc etc all for £25 + VAT per year and it has all the necessary stuff like Perl, PHP, MySQL etc and they have live support if you do run into any problems.

Cheers

Alan

I'm using streamline.net and have been very pleased with their reliability.

I used a US based company before and they were diabolical in terms of reliability and support.

You are right to go by recommendation I think.

Cheers,

Neil

LOL well if nothing else it'll give you some words to look out for and compare between providers etc

I use Clikpic, considered other sites/hosting too but I'd rather spend my time with photography than building websites - the Clikpic package is pretty decent although as it's template based you obviously can't customise your site as you would be able to with your own.

Also use Clikpic, did not do too much market investigation, Clikpic was simple to use, met my purpose, reasonable price.

I did investigate building my own site on my own domain but as Simonkit says I would rather be taking pictures.

Clikpic allowed me to link their space to my own domain name, but most providers give that functionality.

Check it out ....

I was going to post about a really top offer of £9+vat for the first year for a .COM site from:

http://www.one.com/en_GB/

This is for a 3Gb storage area or £1.90 per month for 10Gb

They include VERY good gallery software as well so you can setup and manage numerous galleries on line without any additional software.

REALLY GOOD!

My site advertised in the sig is on "1 and 1" they are really good but the value of the www.one.com offer beat them for my new site!

Haven't servage gone downhill recently? I know of two people who have recently ditched servage due to issues, where they were once good.

Check this site out http://www.webnode.com/en/
not sure how good it is as i've only just found out about it

its free so it may not suit your needs, you get 100Meg free storage, you can buy more,
but worth a look if you want to build a small site.

cheers

when people say the webspace of say 1gb does that mean you can only have 1gb's worth of photos on there? or do the photo's get saved somewhere else? (sorry for the stupid question  )

It means you have that much space to store your pictures and web pages. If you want/need ,more you can normally buy extra space :)

Who ever you use be careful of the terms. I used a host once and when I wanted to leave I had to fork out £350 for each of the domain names I had. I had two domain names at the time.

Also, you need to think about how easy it will be to change the site and how much it'll cost you.

Beware.

I got my site and hosting through Bludomain, $100 for the year, when i signed up the £ was still strong then and cost me £52 or there about, would be at least £60 to £65 now for the same.

clikpic for me. It gives me all the functionality I need and has been very reliable. I'm thinking of starting a second site on it.

http://heartinternet.co.uk are pretty good and are uk based.

I'd also vote for these guys.

If you want a small basic site they'll even host it for FREE. Although if you want anything more advanced (e.g. CGI scripts, PHP, SQL databases etc) you will need to pay. But the package I'm on (Home Pro) is only £90 a year and has 60GB of data transfer a month and 20GB of HDD space  I've even used their customer support once and found them to be very quick and efficient.

Plus they offer an affiliate program so that if you recommend their services they'll reward you...

This is certainly good advice. I always separate domain from hosting. I use 123-reg.co.uk for domains as they are cheap as chips, and then use a US company for hosting, which have been fine.

The important thing is that if I get fed up with said US company, then I am still in control of all my domains. So all I would have to do is to log into my 123-reg control panel and change the name servers to any new host.
