Since it was dark outside, and nothing much to shoot inside I had no choice but to pick on Junior my pet Cockatiel tonight. I've not tried flash with the D3 so put some new batteries in the SB600 and had a play.

Comments welcomed as I'm still not too sure on using flash. I'm hoping to get hold of an SU800 and another SB600 soon to try off camera flash as well.

Love the second one - he's a poser isnt he :)

....or she!

Good job, if I could get anything like that of our parrot I'd be happy, can you go into a bit more detail re: the flash?

Thanks, he does like to pose for a bit, until he gets bored ( which doesn't take long ) We have a house rabbit that's not so keen.

As for the flash, it's just on camera but bounced. Either off the wall to the side, behind me, or the ceiling. I find at close range a wall to the side worked best most of the time, but angled up to try and bounce a little off the ceiling for fill-in on the other side.

Very sharp crisp shots of a lovely bird.
To improve them use a backdrop (sheet / blanket etc).
