Photo archiving? External drive and/or cloud? (Mac)

Yes
Hello,

I would like to archive some old files. I don't like deleting stuff because you never know when it will be useful again!

Looking into external drives and/or cloud solutions. I have a (very full) Macbook running Snow Leopard. We have a Time Capsule at home which we use with Time Machine - can I plug an external drive into that to use for archive and do a cloud back up too? Would rather that as I don't have a desk as such for my macbook and it is generally on my knee wherever I am, so would be unlikely to regularly sit down and plug and external drive in.

Thank you :)

A Time Capsule will take an external USB drive attached to it, which sounds like your easiest option.

If not, the other option which might work for you would be another network hard drive. Most of the hard drive manufacturers make them (for example, the Western Digital MyBook World Edition), and they're not usually that much more expensive than the plain USB drives. You can then just plug that into your router at home and it'll be available from your laptop via your network. But if you've got the Time Capsule, then this is probably unnecessary.

Obvioudly cloud backup is another option, but i'd very darefully read their terms and conditions before using it for archive if that's going to be your only copy. A lot of the cheap options could just disappear one day without notice, and might take your data with them.

David

As scuby says, plenty of options for cheap network storage connected to router, 'Cloud computing' seems to be all the rage at mo, but wouldn't touch with a barge pole personally...
Would you trust ANYONE else with holding your data???
Have you ANY backup at the moment, your post would indicate otherwise... I would suggest a solution is needed sooner, rather than later. A small 2.5 backup (250gig for < £40) is small and lightweight and doesn't require external power (powered from macbook)
Never trust a (single )HDD, I work in IT and have seen first hand, people who have lost treasured memories for the sake of a few pounds ( they have backup now! of course.)

Agree with the above. Memory is so cheap nowadays that it's a no brainer.
I have 2 HDD that I work from both duplicates with one with me at all times. I will never trust CD/DVD again due to too many corruption incidents.
Phil.

Just be very careful about the backup living in the same place as you do. God forbid a disaster you dont want to be looking in the wrekaage for your archives! I have a copy local, a copy on the cloud and regularily swap the local copy with a HD stored at my mums 15 miles away.

Yes, I already backup via Time Machine on the Time Capsule. I think I will look into getting another external had drive and plugging it into the router, and perhaps a cloud solution too. Thanks everyone :D

with internet based storage (i hate the term "the cloud") id look at the amount of data you want to store and your internet speeds up and down and whether you have any limitations on transfer.

Hi,

If you want a cheapish secure solution and use Windows Live, how about Skydrive? I think the limit is 25GB.

Its probably the best free solution out here, however I stand to be corrected:shrug:

Good point

Google skydrive. It's not restricted to windows and it's free.

Cloud is the most abused term out there right now. But to the person who does not trust someone on the Internet with their data - thanks for making me chuckle :)
