Hi, please can you advise the best software to buy for photo editing? Is it photoshop 10 ?

That would depend on what editing you want to do, and how much you want to spend. You could argue that the 'best' photo editing software is PS CS5, simply because of how powerful it is. However, CS5 is overkill for a lot of image manipulators, who are more than happy to work with a watered down version such as Elements 10.

However, if cost is a consideration, you could argue that Gimp is the best software available because it's free.

Personally if I was just starting out and wanted software capable of meeting my immediate requirements, but which also had sufficient features that would allow me to learn and progress without having to upgrade, then I would probably go for Elements.

Photoshop Elements 10 is the latest in the elements stable and has more than ample tools for retouching your photos. Amazon has it on sale currently £49.99, if you shop around you might find it a few quid cheaper elsewhere. I use Elelments 9 and it does myself and most others just fine.

If you want the big brother the Adobe photoshop CS 5 (I think is the latest) It has a few more tools than Elements 10 but a good bit more expensive, £546.67 at Amazon. If your a student then you can get it cheaper.

Lightroom is very good too, it will manipulate photos to a extent and take care of organising your collection as does Elements, a great bit of software, round about £150, again a good bit cheaper if you have a student card.

There is Gimp a free software editing tool, it does the job but doesn't have all the fancy tools as above software. Can't comment on software for the mac as I don't have a mac

Before shelling out hard earned (?) cash on any of the Adobe software I would recommend trying before you buy. You can download trial versions of Lightroom, Elements and CS5 and try for 30 (or is it 60) days for free. The trial version is the full monty not a cut-down or limited version.

HTH :)

Is there any software with your camera ?

Canon supply some good photoediting software with their bodies and you can get free upgrades from their site as well...

im using a program i got free years ago, from arcsoft, photo studio 2000. its not bad, but i have been dying to get Elements 10... which thanks to christmas i will now be getting next week probably. i also have GIMP, but i dont like it as much (sorry gimp fans)

if your relatively new to editing photo's you could try one of the freebee downloads first like photoscape (google it) which is easy to use and notarf bad

Like Andyred says, did you get a CD with your camera? Is there an editor on there?

If you have a Nikon, ViewNX 2 is either on your CD or is available as a free download from their website. I believe Canon have a similar free editor.

Before shelling out real money, try the free ones to discover what adjustments you use a lot and which you don't need. There's no point in paying £200+ for an application of which at most you'll use five percent of its capabilities.

i didnt like the canon one that came with my camera
