Hi guys,

New here so not sure if this is the correct place but here goes...

I'm thinking of taking on a photo project so I can really get stuck into something and hopefully produce a photo book afterwards.

I was wondering if people have taken on projects and what topics/subjects you have chosen and if I should stick to things I am comfortable with or go with something different?

Any help greatly appriciated and a free book when it's done if you're interested :)

Thanks in advance.

Hi Martyn & welcome to the forum

It may help if you could let us know what equipment is available to you but getting stuck into a project that you have no interest in will not last long so maybe have a think about subjects that interest or inspire you.

HTH

Gary :)

That's a good point, never really thought about it from that point before. Equipment wise... a couple of Nikon bodys D80 and D50, plenty of lenses covering 50mm to 400mm. I could probably hire a local studio if required, also I count my car as equipment... allows me to travel to different locations.

I was thinking if picking a word or phrase, or maybe looking through some photography books I have and trying to attach some words to a picture that interests me, then taking a word and putting a series of pictures around it. Just my early ideas.

Good idea ... If you're thinking about doing a photobook, maybe settling on a theme for the whole book which may then inspire you to further books in the future.

How about colours, the first book "Yellow", go out and photography everything you can that is yellow in an artistic way ??

Is there anything Hull is famous for? (I don't mean that to sound like an insult...being being a southerner compared to you up there I wouldn't know!)

I have been contemplating a sporting project related to Manchester...don't want to go too much into it though, but was thinking about compiling a book at the end, hopefully to sell on to the related 'scene' :)

Very good idea... I seem to have lots to work with now, I want to get my idea then do some research rather than just go out and shoot!

None taken, I couldn't really tell you much about the south myself :P Hull used to be famous for it's fishing, not much around now but plenty of buildings around that show that, could use those. We got bombed a great deal during the second World War so I could maybe use that in some way.

I think it topped the worst place to live in Britain two years on the trot. That was a couple of years ago.

If you have the bottle it might be worth having a try at recording the depravation in and around the area and any possible regrowth and restoration of run down areas. Sort of a then and now, this may have to run for a reasonable period to get anything to show differences although you will be able to document the current situation!

That's correct... it did top the worst place to live... with good reason as well I might add

That's actually a really good idea, something I might have to have a look at, especially now I have my equipment insurance :)

I bet if you asked a few of the skallies if you could do a documentary on them they would oblige. There was book called The Firm many years ago - a lovely black & white creation documenting the gangsters of mostly London - the Crays and their "Firm" which operates all over the country. It was really good photography too. I saw a copy (a signed copy!) and was awestruck by the production quality.

You just need to ask and explain what you want to do - maybe they would even give you some ideas....what about graffiti artists. they are big news at the moment (thanks to Banksey and his incredible talent). That could lead on to other subjects....local artists, sculptors, pottery galleries.......
