When an account is created to store images on websites such as Flickr, Photobucket etc. are other account holders/users able to make use of your pics ?

well in flickr you can change your settings so that other users can only view a small version of your pics, only you can view the full size.
If thats what you are wondering.

Yes, that certainly helps,thanks.
I see the occasional report on here of folk mentioning that there pics appear in places without permission and I was wondering if these photo sites have a weakness in that respect.

I would read Flickr's T&C's carefully, external sites can still use your photo as long as it links back to your photostream. It really annoys me when I look at my stats for the week and I've had some views from someone else's blog. You can deny a website access, but for you to do that, they first have to "steal" your photo.

Edit to above, which I didn't know. Flickr's T&C's for external sites, states the above about linking back to where the photo came from.

But what I didn't know is that they can't use the photo if it is All Rights Reserved. They must get my permission first. Silly me!!

Flickr Pro has a setting which limit's other ability to 'right-click' and save your photos on their PC. It's not totally foolproof as you can still do a screen grab, but it would stop most people from stealing them.

All photosites have limitations on how to protect your images. It's an inherent problem with the internet. Just make sure you set your account permissions properly and set your copyright settings appropriately. Apart from that there is not much else you can do to stop people stealing your images other than legal action.

What settings are they please?

but if you just save the web page - you have the photo without messing around with screen shots

its simple really - if you want to keep the rights to your photos only post them on your own website...

it's hard to avoid because if you want your photo seen by public than everybody can easily download it. but if you choose to show your photo between friends only than you won;t be able to put it on forum
