Photobucket Image Colour Shift

Yes
I have raised this issue with Photobucket, and to be fair they have responded promptly however they have not solved the problem (if they do I shall post their solution).

I thought I would run it past the wise people on here to see if anyone could come up with an answer.

Any image I upload to Photobucket ends up a different colour to my original re-sized image, this does not happen on Imageshack or Picasa.

First the image as it should look from Picasa, then the same file uploaded to Photobucket, you will see a dramatic difference in the blue.

Now the crunch bit, from the info panel for each image you will see that the "ColorSync Profile" has been stripped from the Photobucket image, obviously this is causing the issue.

Does anyone know why, and how to fix it?

Make sure you export your jpg as an sRGB image as it could be a colour space issue.

I think that's something Photobucket will have to fix as it looks like their uploading process strips the embedded profile.

My only thought is that perhaps a different profile might get through unscathed - Adobe RGB or a standard sRGB (as apposed to Nikon's version).

Thanks for the replies, those were my thoughts, what seems odd is that both Picasa, and Imageshack work fine with the Nikon sRGB profile.

I shall see what Photobucket come up with, I certainly will not be changing everything just to suit their site when there are others available that work fine with the file as it is.

Colour space is a huge issue that we all have to deal with when displaying images on the web. sRGB is the standard for displaying on the web. I didn't even know there was such a thing as a "Nikon sRGB" and that is most likely the issue. Noone I know uses that profile. Change your export settings to sRGB.

Internet explorer is not a colour managed space so images other than sRGB will likely show differently on the browser.

Thanks ... I fully understand what you are saying, I am baffled as to why it is only Photobucket the issue is with, it works absolutely fine everywhere else.

I shall have a play with some settings later and see what happens

Jim

I changed the export setting to sRGB IEC6 1966-2.1 and uploaded the image to Photobucket, it was still suffering the colour shift as shown above.

Photobucket support suggested uploading as a .png file, same result a colour shift.

In both cases the "ColorSync Profile" had been stripped from the images during uploading, I am sure that this is the cause of the issue I am seeing.

I have fed this back to photobucket support, and await their response.

Millions upload to Photobucket..... Is it maybe the way you are exporting?

I had considered that Jim, to be honest I had noticed it on a couple of images not long ago, and thought I had sorted the issue, it was only when I uploaded the gull shots that the colour difference really stood out and I decided to ask the question.

I edit, prepare and export the images the same way to Imageshack, Picasa, my gallery on here, and Photobucket, the only place causing me grief is Photobucket ... my analytical brain tells me the issue is with Photobucket, otherwise the problem would manifest itself with the others.

Having sent their tech support numerous images, they have confirmed that it is their software stripping the profile, they have alerted their engineering department, however they do not expect a swift response.

In the meantime they have given me a free upgrade to a pro account, so I shall see if that is any better.

I have been keeping an eye on this thread Martyn, and it is strange why it is happening and look forward to your findings. Did you by any chance take a look here? And the part which reads "Just an excuse" was aimed more at the pics that are way out to begin with.

to be honest theyre not a million miles different (albeit on my non-calibrated laptop). it could just be a slight difference in compression/processing routines, it may be worth asking both providers what they do to uploaded photos and trying to compare.

Yes Rich, I could see a difference in the two images

Neil, there is a vast difference the blue is totally different in the two images. (I am using calibrated Eizo ColorEdge monitors)

The problem is that Photobucket strips out the Colour Profile info, the others leave it intact.
