Just a little experiment. I uploaded the same picture to both 800 pixels wide and about 200KB.

Edited to add -

The Flickr file is now 140KB and the Photobucket 84KB.

Depressingly, neither is anyway near the quality of the original.

Thoughts?

I buy my own hosting.. hundred thousand pics costs me about 50 quid a year www.tsohost.co.uk get yourself any old free gallery thats about and you then have complete control over everything..

Sry what do you mean by get yourself any old gallery thats about ? Do you mean go to a site that specialises in hosting photos.

John.

from what i understand (or was told on here) they dont touch the original.

The original is not processed, but the default viewing sizes used for browsing have definitely been sharpened. If someone posts to a pro account the original can be viewed by clicking "view all sizes" on a photo by photo basis (a bit laborious) but I don't think there is any way you can choose to view original size by default like you can with pbase (for example).

Interesting info. regarding the resizing and sharpening on PB and Flickr - have seen some discussion of it before but wasn't aware of the detail.
