Photographing Babies!

So we’ve been blessed with having two new arrivals in the family over the past few weeks. My wife gave birth to our second daughter just over 3 weeks ago, and my Niece also gave birth to her first son 5 weeks ago.

I’ve been asked to get some nice photo’s of the two of them together (and alone too I suppose) – I will also try and get some with our 8 year old daughter on them too; and maybe the mums if they’re feeling brave enough!

I’m looking for some advice on the setup etc really. Not done anything like this before. Took plenty of general family photo’s etc and I do the odd boxing event. This is all new territory though (although portraits are something I would like to explore)

I’ve got the following kit.

• 450D (with IS Kit Lens)
• Nifty Fifty
• 360AFD Flash Head
• Tripod

I’ve not got any backdrops etc, but was thinking of ringing some sort of DIY thing together over the weekend. Got plenty of sheets, rugs, pillows etc.

Any advice would be appreciated please, lads & lasses.

White bedlinen is your friend :) A couple of white pillows to support them for some "propped upright" pics and if you don't have a white duvet cover just spread a white sheet over the bed and bingo you have a suitable set.

Nifty fifty would be my choice of lens and open as far as you can. If you get some nice daylight through a window that can work but in this dull horrible stuff a flash may well be a necessity. If you can get a cord so you can use it off camera and stick the flash on the tripod rather than your camera.

Have a look here http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=photography+lighting+babies&search_type=&aq=f Should give you plenty of lighting advice. :)

yep as said above, i have also used the good old sofa and then the child lies down on there and can pose themselves, heres some shots of my little bro using nothing but window light, a white bedsheet, and a DSLR with my kit lens:

babies i feel need to be presented in pristine white with soft side lighting

Give yourself plenty of time - getting them both happy (or both asleep) at the same time could be tricky.

Print out pose ideas before the day so you don't waste time
Get them in outfits that don't clash
Just in nappies is lovely at that age
Make sure all lighting / settings are set up before the babies are

Cheers for all this.

Knew you lot could help out!

Thanks again, will take it all on-board!
