Hi All

Having never photographed any sporting event I thought I might try my hand at shooting our works cricket team tomorrow evening (assuming they can get a team together:lol:).

Can any sporting togs offer me some advise as to best position to shoot from? I will be using my 50D with either the 100-400mm L zoom or, if needs be, the Sigma 500 f4.5.

I was thinking of using manual settings, initally meter of the grass, keep shutter to 1/500+ with a wide aperture, adjusting iso to keep up shutter speed. Should have good light which will help.

Does this sound ok?

Thanks
Rhod

Hi Rod,

When I shoot cricket matches and it's sunny, I don't manually meter, but underexpose by 0.7 or 1 stop so that their whites aren't blown. As for lens choice, I'd go with 100-400 L as 500 may be too much and you will get much more flexibility with the zoom. The zoom will also allow you to get shots of the fielders closer in if the ball goes to them. If it's batsmen you're trying to shoot, then the shoots look much better (IMO) if they are hitting the ball towards you. I find that a good place is not quite behind the bowler's arm, but I bit on the off side.

Hope this helps :D

And try and get a player list and know who's batting and bowling.
You might just get that great shot the local papers might want, but they will want some info on batter and bowler.

Thanks mate, but if the boys get a team together and I get a few decent shots I'll be happy. Still you never know.................:)
