Yes
I have a Nikon D3100 and have been asked to photograph an art installation for a college friend - who will be using people and a projector that she wants captured in pictures - anyone know what the best kind of settings are ? thanks. jmc

we'd need a lot more information first.

It would just be in a smallish room - I think it will be darkish (otherwise the projector wont show up the images properly) - I don't know yet if she will be still or moving in it - she may have to be still for some short period to get pictures - but I can't work out the ISO range or aperture - I dont want to wash out the proector or have it so dark you can't see what is happening.

I did someting similar - for a theatre company where projections were on the actor and background - is that the sort of thing? Exposures varied a lot but were around 1/100th @f/3.5 at 6400 ISO. Very hard to tell what you'll find. Just take test shots and look at the screen then make adjustments. I don't think anyone can tell you what settings to use without actually being there!

Yes I think it will be that kind of thing - thanks for the starting point - think it will be largely trial and error - just so many possibilities ! Thanks for your help

I was using a D3 and a 70-200mm VR lens - you might struggle with the D3100 - no idea what it's high ISO capabilities are.

Surely she will have some kind of run through, so that should give you lots of time to experiment?

I think I'd be inclined to start off in full auto with the flash supressed, check the EXIF data and Histogram and modify the settings in Shutter Priority from there.

The 3100 ISO definately goes up to 6400 - not quite as clear as D3 but not bad - will probably try and experiment a bit before - not sure if there is any run through ! thanks

think I had better start experimenting sooner rather than later !
- thanks
