Hello!

First post on the forum, just looking for some helpful information.

I want to enrol on a Photography course, having been a keen photographer for a fair while, to possibly lead to a change of career. I am very interested in digital photography and using the computer to edit and what-not. There are two that I am looking at but am not sure which one will benefit me more and look better on a CV (along with a decent portfolio of images of course). Have read up and looked at plenty of info on the courses but I am still undecided.

One is an AS in Photography which I think kids take when they are 18 or 19 now? But I never had that privilege.:'(

The other is Photography level 1 or 2 NCFE Certificate.

Both are about the same price to do. I have read that an AS is a higher level than NCFE Certificate but it seems as though the NCFE has more on the course that would interest me.

I just wanted to get an actual persons opinion on which course is best to go for, or whether it just depends on what I, personally want to do with photography. Like I say, ultimately I am looking to maybe one day change my career from what I am doing now, to Photography and am trying to figure out my first and best options.

Thanks all for you time.

Level 1 NCFE is to make you somewhat proficient in camera use i.e. exposure controls, composition, basic editing etc. and NCFE Level II takes you on from this to develop a theme and delve deeper into ideas. Some places do run a Level III course and this delves much deeper into very specific areas such as studio work.

You can download the guides from the NCFE website.

I can not answer for the AS level.

Whilst I do not say that any of these will make you a photographer they are a good intro to get you started. Most photographers start and learn themselves and take the odd course here and there as they need it.

Hi Sam

I don't know that going on a course will help a change of career more than just practicing and making use of the tutorials on here and others available online unless they teach all the business side of it as well as the photography as that is probably just as, if not more, important than the photography itself

This is my thinking after reading a lot of posts here and elsewhere. I'm looking at a change in career to photography as a long term plan and started looking at courses, but I think I'm better off concentrating my efforts on practicing A LOT, putting the £££ I'd spend on a course into investing in kit and putting together a proper business plan, and soaking as much free learning as I can from sites like this.

I'd maybe look at a course at a later date if I felt there was specific areas of my photography that I feel would benefit from some face-face tuition or to facilitate professional body membership, but I think I'll steer clear of generic "photography" courses.

Just my 2p.
