I am flying out to Australia in the next week or so. I only have a Nikon D60 and a 18-55 kit lens, and a 55-200 AF lens, no other equipment. Is there anything I should buy ( not expensive) that would help with those lovely landscapes. It will be autumn out there ( a bit like our April only warmer).

The last time I went I had the kit 18-55 and a Canon 70-300 on a 300D body, I would have liked a UWA lens for some landscape shots. Where abouts in Oz are you going?

A tripod or some type of support for your landscape shots, as the best time will be dawn or dusk so longer apertures required which means slower shutter speeds and preferable not hand held. The gorillapod ain't bad if you want to keep weight down and isn't too expensive or lightweight tripod. The Circular Polariser suggested by AC another good idea.

If you finally decide on going for an ultra wide lens pick one of the tokina like the 11-16mm, great lens although personally, I'm not a great fan of them because of the distortional effect with these lenses. You really need an understand of when to use them..

Where are you going in OZ?

I've been on a world wind tour of the state of Victoria when I went out on business, had a couple of weeks out there. Its a great state to visit, Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles, Melbourne, Wilsons Promontory National Park, Philip Island, lots to see and do and lots of miles in the hire car with speeding fines :D, they're abit hot on that in OZ

How much do you want to spend? There's the Sigma 10-20, Tokina 11-16 or 12-24, Nikon 12-24/4...

Thanks for the suggestions but I really dont have much money to spend.

I'm going to Perth. My parents have been there for years so I have been before.

Circular Polariser.

I dont know what that is. I will look it up though. Thanks

Hire a lens off www.lensesforhire.co.uk, cheaper than buying and top notch service.

Yes I am going to Perth. I may hire a lens out there as I am going in a few days so wont have time to arrange it here.

I'm going to Perth. Fancy lenses would be lost on me cause I wouldnt know how to use them.I have got a tripod now. I forgot to mention that. I have been out to Oz 7 times now and havent managed to get a speeding fine yet.

Thank you for all your replies. I guess what I am most likely to get is a filter or two. I have been wanting a 50mm 1.8 for some time now and will get one eventually but I dont think I would use it much over there would I? Arent they best for low light situations?

In addition to the above: Cokin holder/adaptor and a couple of ND (or event some coloured) grad filters!

On my last trip out to Perth, I think most of my shots were taken with my 24-105, and my 70-200. If you have a tripod, then a night time shot of the city from Kings Park or the other side of the Swan River is a must do.

I didn't have a tripod, but used a Gorillapod SLR Zoom which held the weight of my 40D and 70-200 without any problems.

I have loads more photos of Perth, Fremantle etc, but never found the time to upload them to flickr.

Okay, best bet then would be hire a lens out there for a day or three. Circular polarizers. 50/1.8 is good for low light portraits, or objects in the landscapes not so much for wide landscapes. Use your/a tripod and your kit lens @ 18 and you should do fine with some landscapes.

Thank you both. I will look for those filters at the airport if I can, if not when I get there. As I am probably flying Monday I dont think I will have time to get them locally.

I looked at your link. I particularly like your first picture of Perth at night.I have been up in Kings park at night before and got pics with my compact but this is the first trip there with my DSLR.I am staying in a suburb of Fremantle.
