I'm wondering what the procedure with Canary Wharf and photography is now. They say on their website:

All filming or photography on the Canary Wharf Estate requires written permission from Canary Wharf Group plc (CWG), with the following exceptions:
Filming or photographing for amateur or student purposes using minimal equipment in an outside area (students should have with them a student ID card and a letter of introduction from their educational institution).
Canary Wharf tenants / occupants filming or photographing inside the offices of companies based on the Canary Wharf Estate.

It also states:

If the filming or photography requires equipment in addition to a handheld camera or tripod, a method statement and risk assessment must be completed along with the application form.

So I'm wondering if a permit is actually required at all... does anyone have any experience photographing there without a permit and what security said/questioned you on etc? I have read a few stories, some more horror full than others! But wondering if those are just the unluckier ones.

Having said all this I have emailed someone about all this too so wondering what they will say too (found an email address here). Just wondering what experiences all you have had.

(Also, a side question, for those that did get a permit how much does it cost if anything at all?)

Aye, I came across that post, but now I'm wondering if you in fact need a permit at all. When I checked the site they seem to state amateur photography with a handheld camera + tripod is fine as long as that's all. I'm wondering has it eased off a bit due to the media re photography recently.

Security WILL stop you and ask for the permit so yes, you will need one.
 
I've just had a permit issued to me because I'm involved in a migrant bird project in the Canary Wharf area (and I don't mean Aussie girls working for CitiGroup)!

It's main exclusions are not photographing in retail areas at certain times, certain interior areas, building entrances and security arrangements.

It also states that equipment must be handheld.
 
Dean photo just did a car shoot in a residential carpark. The shots were fantastic.

Nice about the student passes. I'll add it to my list of place to go
 
The Press Office are very accommodating to requests, but I would certainly make sure you have a permit with you before you start shooting as the more jobsworth paranoid minded security guards will run across the road to stop you pressing that shutter (no, I'm not joking!).

The permit we had for the TP meet permitted tripods, provided they weren't oversized professional tripods, so if you wanted/needed to take one, be sure to mention it.

Be prepared to show the permit on a regular basis. Provided you are operating within the permissable action printed on the permit itself, you'll be allowed to carry on with what you are doing.

I did a shoot there about five years ago without any problems. We got the permit and were asked several times to show it, but other than that, nobody hassled us or told us we couldn;t shoot in any particular locations.
