Photography in Nepal

I'm away to Nepal on Monday for 2 weeks - not trekking, just spending time with some of the locals in Kathmandu and Pokhara (Church visit).

Has anyone here ever been to Nepal? Just looking for general photography tips whilst there - how are people in the streets about their photos being taken? Do they have an aversion to it? Do they expect payment? Do they allow photography in and around their temples?

Cheers in Advance,

Chris

Yeah, I've been to Nepal. Usually no restrictions on photos anywhere - there will be signs if its not allowed. Just be sensitive when photographing people - ask permission. Some will ask for payment - 10 rupees is enough (keep a stack of notes handy). Don't pay kids, though. Have a great time. Kathmandu is a crazy place.

There are a few Nepal shots in my India & Nepal set on flickr

Cheers guys, most helpful, following the links as I type!

Peter - is their anything in particualr you think I should make a point to go and see in Kathmandu? Did you spend anytime in Pokhara?

The highlights are pretty obvious from any guide book.

Swayambhunath temple is a must.

Patan and Bhaktapur are great places (especially Bhaktapur)

But generally, just wandering around the streets in Kathmandu is really good fun, especially in the old part of town where you just get lost in the narrow lanes.

We didn't go to Pokhara.

We only had 3 days in Nepal - its a pity I would have liked longer and would love to go back.

If you're feeling flush, you can get a flight to Everest - takes about an hour and was (I think) about US$100 - well worth it.
