Yes
I'm new (ish) to Kent and although I know of quite a lot of places round me, I thought it might be good to have a thread where we can exchange location ideas.

I know "everywhere is a location" yada yada yada ;) but I mean specific places to go for something in particular.

I'll start ...

- Bedgebury Pinetum (lovely if you're into plants!)
- Howletts Animal Park (zoo)
- Tenterden (lovely village)
- St Leonard's Crypt / Ossuary, Hythe
- Turner Contemporary gallery, Margate
- Shell grotto, Margate (random! But difficult lighting)
- Samphire Hoe
- Dungeness
- Deal / Deal pier

Leeds Castle, any of those 'older' places such as dover, hastings - general costal areas..

Hi. I recently discovered Hole Park, and there's a huge number of picturesque villages like Matfield and Benenden, not to mention Rochester and its castle and various cultural events (like Dickens Festival etc).

Good thinking! I haven't made it to Rochester yet since I moved to Kent, so that's a whole new area. Where is Hole Park?

Some of the villages are lovely. I think Goudhurst is my personal favourite so far. One day I'll even stop there and not just drive through!

Hole Park is near Rolvenden. And there's Maidstone's River Festival.

The military canal at Hythe has a lot of interesting viewpoints, and every other year there's the Venetian fete which takes place on the canal on the third Wednesday of August every other year (next one is this August).

Thanks. I'll look up the Maidstone river festival.

I've never hears of the Venetian fete. That sounds like fun! Thanks. I'll look into it :)

The "Sea Wall" along the Medway from Hoo to Kingsnorth and on towards the Isle of Grain is interesting. Lots of wildlife, loads of small islands and the tide goes out a long way so it looks very different at various times. Normally holds a number of wading birds as well.

Then there's the Dickens festival in Rochester, but as I moved away some years ago I can't remember when it is.

99% of my landscape photography I've taken in the best part of the past decade are all at and around Folkestone.

But then again you will expect something like that from an agoraphobic such as me. :wacky: :cautious: :D  (I don't like travel).

I like Folkestone especially around the Warren area, spent quite a bit of time there and the Air Display was very good too. Nice little harbour, some decent pubs and eateries too

Another couple of good photo spots are Oare Marshes near Faversham or just up the coast a bit to Conyer

Googled that fete. Not sure what to make of it.

Thanks. Medway is an area I don't know at all, so I'll look into that too, thanks.

Never heard of Oare Marshes or Conyer. I shall investigate, thanks!

may I suggest the north downs, hours of walking

Hmm - yes, the downs are lovely. But as a Scot I'm afraid the landscape is a little lacking for me ;)

I googled it this morning too :) It looks good, but the sheer numbers of people involved have put me off a little bit. Especially as I'd be going with my son (who'd not yet be 2 at that point).

I'll have a think, but if I do go, I'd probably buy seating just for the reason of going with my son - which I'm not sure is best for photography.

Rochester Dickens festival is the 3rd-5th of June this year, and there's a Christmas Dickens usually the first weekend in December. If you fancy Medway there is Medieval Merriment in September in the grounds of Rochester castle, and don't overlook Upnor castle just down the road. (I work for Medway Council Heritage department and so am a bit biased, but it really is nice, honest. ;))

I have tried to post this twice - detailed posts and have lost both so this will be quick

Merriments Gardens Kent/Sussex border. Beautiful (pay to enter) gardens, bird watching area, sales, cafe

Waterside, Hawkhurst actually a fishery but has very good food in cafe and lots of lakes (not all available to non-anglers) and variety of native and ornamental waterfowl.

If anyone fancies a visit to either of these please give me a shout as I visit Merriments regularly and Waterside occasionally

The shipwreck near Cliffe Fort

Yeah another for Hearn its one of the "better" coastal towns and has the peir.

Considering I spent 20 years their my mind is at a blank

What about Reculver Castle? Canterbury Cathedral, Dungeness beach, Rochester Cathedral, Port Lympne, Howletts? (y)

Im going to jump on the location band wagon, does anyone know of any interesting derelict sites in kent?????

In Rochester this Saturday 1st December it is dickens weekend. Lots of people dressed in period costumes. Well worth a visit. Im Trying to get there with camera before enjoying an evening of socialising in the bars of Rochester

Has anyone mentioned Knole Park in Sevenoaks, one of the original deer parks from Henry V111's time. There are still good herds of fallow and the odd sika deer there.
I think their should be a Christmas market in Rochester soon, possibly starting this weekend, along with the Christmas Dickens festival.
You also have the Sweep's festival in Rochester, and the various forts along the river, which provided protection from invaders.
There are follys at Hadlow and Cobham (Darnley Mausoleum), and Hever castle and Penshurst place are worth a visit.
The historic Royal Naval Dockyard in Chatham is an incredible place, so much to see - ropemaking mueum - working, lifeboat museum, HMS Gannet - 19th Century training ship, HMS Cavalier - 1940's destroyer, HMS Ocelot - submarine, lots more.
