Hello everyone new to the site today and new to cameras as of yesterday.

I was wondering if anyone knew a good free photography software package I could use while I learn about things. I appreciate they wont be the best and I can pick up software at reasonable prices; however as I am completely new to cameras never mind DSLR cameras I am simply looking for something I can download and play about with to aid my learning.

I should note I am currently playing with Google Picasa

Many thanks

I dont know if this is any use, but adobe do 30day trials on lightroom / photoshop etc. may be worth downloading one of them and having a play!

give gimp a try if on windows, can be a bit frustrating but its free.

Welcome to TP

2 free downloads are GIMP and Paint.Net
I preferred Paint.Net and found it very powerful and easier to use than GIMP but GIMP seems to have more users and therefore more tutorials etc on the internet.
Both of these will allow you to do basic edits and also use Layers, Levels, Curves etc. That all probably sound strange to you but there is help and advice on the internet and any photoshop book from the library will have info on the techniques even if the GIMP / Paint.Net tools are slightly different.
Once you have used one of those for a bit you will have an idea of what to look for if you do decide to buy something different.

Gimp is a good free tool but quite hard to get to grips with, patience will pay off though. A good all round editor is photoscape, easy to use with some ok presets.

I'd give photoscape a try it's free to use and it a really nice simple too for editing you cannot do really fancy stuff but for simple editing, I find it to be really great  and I have no hesitation in recommending it 90%+ of my photo's are done using photoscape

Also welcome to TP and the world of photography

I have been using Picassa from google. Its a good programme and free with some very good auto tools. Just about to upgrade to adobe Photoshop Elemements 10 but will be keeping picassa as a back up

Cheers folks. I tried Photoscape but didn't understand it to be honest. I am starting from scratch I don't even know what layers etc do lol.

I will get there slowly lol

Download Picasa, it's very basic but at least you'll learn the basics.

Have you tried Canon's Digital Photo Professional that came with your camera?

No I had no idea I had software provide, I will re check the CDs provided but didn't see any first time around.

Hi

Yes check your cd's that came with your camera, you get a full range of free software from Canon and free updates from their site aswell.

Install the software from your cd, then go to Canon europe web site and choose your camera etc and install the latest version from there - becase it's an upgrade, you must have it already installed on your comp.

Andyred thanks I went back through the CDs and loaded cannons software.

I now have the Picaso, paint net and the cannon stuff so this should be more than enough for me to play around on and learn a few things.

I need to get to grips with what all the settings and functions are and how best to use the lenses now. Then I can play editor and take them from seriously below average quality to still below average quality lol.

I can not believe how much info there is to try and learn about all the things to do with photography.

This appears to be a great site and you have all been very helpful so far.

Thanks

Added my name so will be watching with interest.

Just got back from a birthday party so I'm going to sit and play around with the pictures I have taken on these editing tools now.

Thanks again for all help offered so far.
