Photography Website Development Project

Morning all,

I've been into Web development for approximately 3 years now and I've decided (after much research) that what we don't have as a community is decent, opensource, photography website software.

Sure you can hack Wordpress to do what you want or you can pay for a website from a number of companies. But who want's to pay, and half the time you're buying a product and you're not entirely sure it can do everything you want.

So.

I'm starting a development project to build said software. Currently my brief is fairly loose:

Features:
  • Photo upload/batch upload
  • tagging, categories, labels
  • import from .lrcat files (or another format of LR output)
  • integration with Flickr/paypal/
  • integration with printing services with published API's
  • Themes
  • Rights management & security
  • Back-end management (think wordpress 'dashboard' style)
I have two questions for the happy people on TP:

1: What features/functionality would you like to see in a full photography-specific system like this?

2: Are there any people conversant in php, MySQL, Javascript, Ajax, HTML CSS, or any combination thereof who would like to contribute to the project? Ability (or lack thereof) isn't an issue, so if you're new to a language and want something to do to get your skills off the ground then PM me and we can talk.

Anyway, this is all in the concept stage atm, I'm still working through the basics of the system's operation on paper before I start writing anything.

As always, geneeral thoughts and ideas are appreciated!

Mike out.

Good idea there.

I think it will help others to use such a system with building website but as its all down to the user's taste they can go something as simple with HTML or Flash with Content management system in the background.

I hate to burst your bubble but there are many starting websites that do similar things as your posy suggest. Things like Wix.com is one.

You might be right on this count.

Gallery does some some oif what I'm thinking. And is a much, much bigger project than this is likely to bloom into.

Aye, the choice to biuld/buy/use something is there

Mostly, I'm starting this project because I want to have something to work at over the next few years, and because I've not seen anything out there (for free) that provides the list of features I'm hoping to include.

In my head, I see 'wordpress for toggers', in reality... well.. who knows?

Sounds like a really good idea this. I have been looking for something to use for my website but have resorted to a simple wordpress blog until I find anything more suitable or I improve my coding skills to develop a website myself.

I have php, MySQL, Javascript and some HTML/CSS experience so could be up for giving a helping hand on this. When I say experience I mean basic experience just so you know

Exactly the experience I've had BritRich, almost to the letter.

If you'd like to contribute that'd be awesome :) I'm very much using this to improve my skills so inexperienced people very much welcome!

I'm still gaining names/interested parties atm, I'll be setting up the project code repository later this week and I'm still fleshing out an initial brief for the system. More information when I have it!
