as the title asks is there much difference between these versions
i'm a total novice and have only played with GIMP briefly before
i've seen version 7 cheap or as part of a Bamboo pen+touch deal

Form a PP point of view there is very little difference.
I upgraded from PSE7 to PSE8 because, despite updating Camera Raw in PSE7. I could not get it to open the .NEF RAW files from D300s.
You can download trial versions.

If you go for it remember that a minimum of 1GB of RAM is recommended.
