photoshop question

Hi

I know this should probably go in the processing section of the forum but this is so basic I thought perhaps it would be better here.

I am about to get a new laptop with some funding from work. I am also able to get some software too so thought I would invest in Photoshop. However I'm confused about which package to go for. I also need to get Adobe Premier for work-related video editing so I don't know if that makes a difference. I'm basically a little confused about what I need - lightroom? elements? the full whammy?

Any basic advice would be much appreciated.

thanks :)

Lightroom is a great way to organise your images and you can quickly do some pretty advanced processing. Anything where you need to use layers (especially chopping bits in and out of photos) you need photoshop or at least photoshop elements.

I use Lightroom and Elements. The two integrate to some extent so I do most of my processing in Lightroom and then choose the 'edit in photoshop elements' function when I need to do something more drastic.

Hope this helps

Phil

Oh...and you can edit the typo in the title by 'going advanced'!

Thanks - think I was editing it as you posted :) figured that out afterwards :)

hmm ok so it would be the elements and lightroom package then not the CS5 package I'd need to go for? I'm finding the adobe website rather confusing! :)

Adobe produce four packages, Design, Web, production and master collection. They all vary which software they contain, but all have photoshop, not sure which ones have Premiere, click on the package links to see full content.

They are not cheap though.

You can of course buy Photoshop and Premiere individually.

If it's funded then go for it say I :) Get the full Photoshop, Premiere and Lightroom if possible too. Elements is just lacking in so many areas imho

Thanks. I'm still trying to figure out what my budget will be, which will obviously affect what I go for. Stupid question - but if I got the full photoshop I would not need to get elements right? would I still need to get lightroom?

I have looked at their comparisons of products but it's still not clear to me (I'm probably just being dim!)

Elements is basically Photoshop lite, a basic version of PS. Lightroom is purely photograpic software, and very good. If you only want software for your photography then Lighroom is the way to go.

Thanks - so they are basically mutually exclusive? So you could in theory get lightroom and photoshop or lightroom and photoshop elements or just lightroom etc?

Can't agree to that Danny, Lightroom is a great program but I also use Photoshop for most of my editing and they integrate seamlessly as they should. I'm sure one day Lightroom will be good enough on it's own but not quite yet. At least for me anyway.

yes, can be either part of a package or used standalone

Yes all 3 are mutually exclusive.......

some say that Lightroom is better for converting a pic to B&W than say photoshop or PS Elements.

For others the advantage of layers in photoshop is a must have.

May be barking up the wrong tree here but does your usertitle of ukphd, indicate that you are undertaking education or work as a teacher (in some capacity?) - If that is the case you can get photoshop for a fraction of the RRP - i think for somewhere around £180 instead of £600 or so..........

Amazon has more info on that.....

Thanks, yes I'm a University Lecturer so I qualify for the educational discount usually - was still trying to find info on that on the adobe site but will try amazon now - thanks

Lightroom is much faster for editing than PS - and has many other benefits too. Download the free trials.

Try Academia, Studica and Amazon Student.

Amazon student were thw cheapest for lightroom 3 but at the time I bought Studica were the cheapest for Photoshop CS5 Extended.
